68 428CJ GT-E hood scoop questions...............

I’ve been looking at the 68 CJ GT-E hood scoops and have been quite taken by the look. Does anyone know if either the 69-70 Eliminator or the 71-72 GT Ram air hood scoops would be a good workable start shape wise to replicate one of the 68 scoops? What is the main shape difference between the 69-70 and 71-72 scoops? WCCC site shows the same measurements for both. How do they compare in shape and size to the 68 GT-E CJ scoop? Is there a factory blueprint of the 68 scoop floating around out there?

My plan is to get a glass hood and somewhat replicate the 67 R code Fairlane underhood cowl work to fit around my oval aircleaner. I’m using a wider oval 2x4 base like the 67 R code Fairlanes had with the foam seal around the edge that the cowl will close and seal against The aircleaner will poke throught the hood a bit so a scoop is needed. Everything is a work in progress far as a scoop goes. And I’m just working ideas. I have a 69-70 Mustang hood scoop I had thought about using. But I’m not so sure how it’ll look. I think the wider and larger Cougar scoops would look better possibly. WCCC says they are 26 1/8" long and that would be a good length for the 22" long aircleaner.

I’m coloring outside the lines a bit with my car as I upgrade things. The engine build is a 427 tunnelport and it can fit under the stock Cougar hood. This would give it a cool sleeper look as stock. But I’d like to take advantage of some cold air if possible with a taller airfilter and hoodscoop. And use the modified glass hood, scoop and underhood cowl work.

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas!

Glenn.

Glenn The key to making the hood scoop work is sealing the air filter base to the underside of the hood. If it is not sealed, the air coming in through the radiator swamps the air at the mouth of the scoop, and the result is that air comes out of the scoop instead of going in.

Hi Bill. Yes the base will be sealed to the underside of the hood. I wish I had pics to better show my idea. A pic is worth 1000 words as they say.

I know this is an old post, but I’ll post the answer so others know. The 71-72 429CJ R/A & GT scoop is shapped to follow the contour of the 71-3 hood. It is narrower at the front than it is in the back, actually over 5" narrower. At the front or inlet side of the scoope it is approx 19 1/4" at the back it is over 24 1/2" wide.

Thank you that’s great to know. I still don’t know how close the 69-70 Eliminator scoop is to the 68 CJ but guess that rules out the 71-72 GT scoop. With the 68 scoop being pretty unique and rare it’s hard to find details about them. No less shape and size comparison.

I owned an R code back in the early 1970’s. From the pictures of it and an eliminator scoop I have here now, there is no real difference. I plan on putting the 69 eliminator scoop on my 68 XR7 along with the black stripe up the center of the hood to replicate the look of the 1968 C.J. Hope this helps.

I was wondering if you got that eliminator scoop on that 68 . I am wanting to do the same thing, if so how much if any modifing, how about some pics.
thanks Dave

The '68 R code scoop used on both GT-E and standard Cougar / XR-7 Cougars was not identical to the later Eliminator / 428CJ scoops used in 1969 - 70. The 1968 part is molded fiberglas, the 69 - 70 part is molded plastic. All of the studs are in different locations.

Many have installed the later scoops on 1967 - 68 Cougars, it does give a similar “look”.

So 69 R Codes built in 68 can have the fiberglass molded hood scoops, right?

I have never seen one, any one else? The holes in the hood are in different locations so It would be odd to find one.

I just assumed mine was fiberglass. At further inspection it looks more like plastic.

Early 1969 R code Cougars had the plastic Eliminator style scoop, but it had the provision for a grille (or bird deflector) in the front.
