68 cougar 427 transplant

I have a 68 cougar, originally a 302, 4 speed. I have bought a 63 Galaxie 427 to transplant. This year 427 had only 2 motor mount holes in the block, does anyone know what type of motor mounts will work? Will any FE toploader bellhousing work?

Not sure on the motor mounts or the bell, but I’m pretty sure the input shaft for the toploader is different for the bigger cube engines…I’m sure Royce or someone will be along to verify for you.

I believe there are special mounts you can buy,to retrofit.
I would think the bell housings are similar and not an issue
I have considered this swap myself, but haven’t dealt with the details involved yet.

This sound like your building a fun Cougar. Will you be making it a GTE clone/tribute Cougar?
Steven

I’m not planning on a GTE clone, but I might add the trim pieces later. I bought this car in 75, restored it in 79-80, sold it in 89, found it on ebay in 2016 while looking for parts for my 69 Eliminator. The paint job was so unique, and the mural of a leaping cougar was still on the hood scoop, no doubt it was my car. I’ve even tracked down the guy I sold it too. He had kept it all these years, (the last 20 in storage).

I did this on “The Tool” my '67 427 - 4 speed build. You need to get 390GT motor mounts and engine plates. One hole on each of the engine plates aligns properly with one of the engine mount holes on the early two bolt FE blocks. You simply need to drill the other hole in each plate. I used a piece of clear plexiglass to make a template. It was no more than 5 minutes of work.

You will also have to change the frame stands to the big block style. Don Rush can fix you up with all the parts needed.

All FE bellhousings fit all FE’s. If you use a '64 or earlier transmission then you have to use matching flywheel, bellhousing and starter. If you use 1965 or later anything all the other components also have to be 1965 or later. You will need big block clutch Z - bar and all the associated mounting parts and adjusters for 1967 - 70 Mustang / Cougar. Fortunately all of it has been reproduced and is a phone call away with credit card in hand.

Thanks for the info!
