'68 Cougar spare tire & jack tools

I recently purchased a ‘68 Cougar and the jack tools were loose in the trunk. I attempted to assemble everything(jack, wrench, cover plate) and attach to the threaded hook rod but it doesn’t fit as shown on the trunk decal.
Not sure how to attach a photo.

Any advice or photos of assembly?

Thanks

It is possible that you have the wrong threaded hook rod. The correct one should be about 8” long with about 3 1/4” of threads and 1/2 X 13 threads. That information is from the WCCC website. It is also possible you have the wrong size spare tire. A 1968 will usually have a 14 X 6 wheel. How does this match up with what you have?

Hi Randy,

Good observations.
I will check these measurements and the tire size and respond back.

What size should be the spare tire?

Thank you,
James

Most 1968s would have a 14 X 6 steel wheel. If the car was ordered with the optional styled steel wheels then it should have a styled steel wheel as the spare. There also was an optional collapsible spare tire. You will need to have a Marti report on your car or the original window sticker to know how your car was equipped.

You may need to adjust the jack so it fits inside the spare wheel rim.

Yes, thank you. I did open up the jack a bit and that helped. I believe the order from bottom to top is jack, tire, cover plate, jack wrench, wing nut, with the outside of the rim pointing up.

If you have the standard wheel there is no cover plate. The jack handle retains the spare wheel and has a hole for that.

Thank you, Royce. I am not sure if it is an original spare wheel.

The date the wheel was made would be interesting.

I’ll see what I can find out. Is the date on the inside tub or the front/back of the wheel?

Should be on the front of the wheel. All I have seen also identify the maker who is Kelsey Hayes (KH).

Thanks, Royce.

So I got some additional information regarding my spare tire/mount set up.
My spare rim is 7 inches wide lip to lip, so I have to believe it’s a 6 inch rim(?). The rim has a stamped marking of E84, but I don’t know what that references.
The tire is a 195/75/R14.
The hook rod is less than 8 inches long and has 4 inches of threads on it.
From some of the prior responses, I have the wrong hook rod and possibly the wrong rim and tire to properly mount the spare in it’s original position.

Hmm the original is more like 9 inches so that won’t work.

Thanks! You had mentioned in a previous post on this thread that there was no cover plate, but this is from the WCCC website link you sent me for the J hook:
“Additionally, look for the wheel centering plate or disc, part number C5ZZ-1424-A”.

The center plate was only used for the styled steel wheels but it will work on any of them.
