I recently purchased a ‘68 Cougar and the jack tools were loose in the trunk. I attempted to assemble everything(jack, wrench, cover plate) and attach to the threaded hook rod but it doesn’t fit as shown on the trunk decal.
Not sure how to attach a photo.
It is possible that you have the wrong threaded hook rod. The correct one should be about 8” long with about 3 1/4” of threads and 1/2 X 13 threads. That information is from the WCCC website. It is also possible you have the wrong size spare tire. A 1968 will usually have a 14 X 6 wheel. How does this match up with what you have?
Most 1968s would have a 14 X 6 steel wheel. If the car was ordered with the optional styled steel wheels then it should have a styled steel wheel as the spare. There also was an optional collapsible spare tire. You will need to have a Marti report on your car or the original window sticker to know how your car was equipped.
Yes, thank you. I did open up the jack a bit and that helped. I believe the order from bottom to top is jack, tire, cover plate, jack wrench, wing nut, with the outside of the rim pointing up.
So I got some additional information regarding my spare tire/mount set up.
My spare rim is 7 inches wide lip to lip, so I have to believe it’s a 6 inch rim(?). The rim has a stamped marking of E84, but I don’t know what that references.
The tire is a 195/75/R14.
The hook rod is less than 8 inches long and has 4 inches of threads on it.
From some of the prior responses, I have the wrong hook rod and possibly the wrong rim and tire to properly mount the spare in it’s original position.
Thanks! You had mentioned in a previous post on this thread that there was no cover plate, but this is from the WCCC website link you sent me for the J hook:
“Additionally, look for the wheel centering plate or disc, part number C5ZZ-1424-A”.
