'68 Cougar, squarish peg, round hole

Just bought this license plate fastener kit.
How does the rectangular head of the rubber stopper fit in the round hole of the rear license plate bracket?
Thanks

The rubber bumper goes in the front valance so it has nothing to do with the rear license plate bracket.

The rubber bumpers go on the front and rear license brackets on 69-70. Mine has the same bumpers on both front and rear brackets, and they have a tapered back so they are easy to insert with some silicone grease. Front bracket looks like this:

Different year Cougars use different style rubber bumpers so it is always helpful if you include what year your car is when asking a technical question. I know that it is as clear as day in your mind what year your car is but to the rest of us it is as clear as mud.

Sorry about that. I just edited the post to include the year('68)

If not rubber bumpers, what are the holes for?

Are you looking at the rubber bumper that would attach to the fold down rear license plate bracket and keep the gas door from hitting the body of the car? If so that little bumper in your first post photo is not the correct bumper for that position. It gets a much larger bumper that is round and as I recall attaches with a screw.

You are correct; however, the photo of my rubber bumper is too big to fit in the bracket hole. Perhaps the photo is not showing the scale of things, but no way the rubber ear on that stopper fits in that hole.
Cheers.

You need this part for the holes on the 68 rear bracket:

Ok, great. Thanks!
I am now curious for what application is the kit I purchased.

The kit you bought is for a ‘68 Cougar license plate mounting.

I am guessing you mean the front license plate, except that the rubber stoppers in the kit are not required for the front license plate, and as has been determined, they are the wrong stoppers for the rear license plate.

the rubber pieces are indeed necessary and essential for mounting the front plate to the valance,

As a newbie, I should have deferred to the brain trust.
I hadn’t considered the valance to bracket.
The WCCC website is normally very descriptive about their parts, but not so in this case.
Thanks, Royce

I purchase this kit recently. That rubber piece separates the license plate from the bracket it bolts too I believe. At least that is where I put mine. Appreciate the link for the other bumpers. Got those in the cart now.
