There is some wind noise coming from both driver and passenger door vent windows at highway speeds in my '68 standard.
Had a look at the rubber weather stripping around the windows and it looks fine on both. When the windows are closed they seem to be sealing against the rubber OK, but I did notice a little free play between the chrome handles and the window frame in the closed position.
Is this normal, or should the handles be really tight against the frame? Is there any way to adjust the handles to make them sit tighter or do they just get sloppy over time and it’s something I have to live with? Or are there any thicker vent window seals available that will do a better job with my slightly loose handles?
Hey Brian. The handles on my vent windows are really tight against the frame, even tighter than I remember them being back in the old days. I’ll see if there are some adjustments there (the car’s over for a safety inspection right now).
I looked at a couple of Mustang videos on YouTube - there’s only a roll pin holding the handle onto the shaft so I doubt whether there is any worthwhile adjustment available. Some people have resorted to adding an extra strip of metal to build up the frame where the handle closes (not appealing).
It’s possible the tips of my handles have worn down over the years so I could either look at some new repro handles or maybe try adding a little bit of metal to the tips of the existing ones. I’ll pull them off today and have a bit of a look see…
Finally got a look at the vent windows and I can’t add much to the discussion. The only thing I can think of is that the frame is slightly bent and that’s keeping it from sealing better but that’s a very inexperienced guess - a bend like that would probably be more obvious. Have you tried temporarily shimming between the handle and the frame with a bit of removable material like some relatively thick tape (like the sports injury wraps I used last night!) to snug it up and see if that’s actually the source of the wind noise?
Wing window handles are a common bane for older cars and trucks. When I put my 68 back on the road last year after 19 years in storage, I found an old roll of dimes in the glove box. One thin dime makes a perfect shim for the slop in my PS wing window handle.
Well, I took one of the handles off and found there was quite a bit of play where it mounts on the shaft (could rock the handle back and forth with very little effort). Filled in the gaps with some two part epoxy as a test and it’s a lot tighter now.
I’ll wait and see how long the epoxy lasts then try to come up with a more permanent solution…
