68 GTE exhaust tips on EBay

I don’t think these have ever been correctly reproduced without the dimples. Were they originally chrome or stainless steel?

Its hard to see the turn down on these.

I thought the same thing. The ad says they have been cut…maybe that’s the reason.

The part that makes them unique to Cougars is what has been cut. Cougars’ are significantly longer than Mustangs,’ and are turned down because they protrude under the valance panel, instead of through the Mustang’s cut out valance.

The part that makes them unique is the tip. The part that has been cut off can be made on any exhaust pipe bending machine in a few minutes.

Here is a link to a post with an original one that is mounted.

Duh - forgot about the dimples.

I think this eBay person is Frank Bowers.

Originals have a stamped in Ford oval as well as the engineering number.

Jim, I was unable to find either the engr part no. or the Ford Oval.

Does that mean these are not originals? Other that those 2 items and the missing connection tube, they do look original.

From my past experience working at Tenneco Automotive, I would think one difficult joint to make in a reproduction part would be where the two tips joint together. You will note from these exceptionally detailed photos that there is not a MIG or TIG weld seam. To me, it looks more like a “resistance” weld which is created by running electrical current thru those 2 parts and enough heat is generated at that joint where the joint interface melts and fuses together. That would be difficult to do and make it look like what Ford did it originally. Unless you are in a business that does resistance welding and have that type of equipment.

We used resistance welding to weld shock absorber reserve tubes together with the base cups and that equipment was quite expensive. Possibly these 2 exit tubes could be placed together in a jig and use am ARC or TIG welder machine to supply enough current to recreate this?

The casting number and FORD logo are on the connection tube.

OK. Thanks Frank!
