'68 Kick Panel Sill Plate Fitment

So I have some questions about this area of my car. Is the sill plate intended to go over both the carpet and the kick panel? That would seem to be the nicest way. Sandwiching it all together is proving difficult. The carpet is cut so that it stops at the seam weld and won’t add extra height. I note comments on this forum about needing to trim the sill plates sometimes? I am more inclined to bend them up a little. I have the inner screws of the sills installed. This will keep the glue tight and compress the fibers some. The kick panels were just lying in the car when I purchased so I don’t have much to reference. They are so clean that I assumed them to be reproductions. How can you tell original kick panels vs repros? Some pictures I found appear more flat and don’t wrap around the pinch weld seam. Also there was 1/2" thick padding for the kick panels that I got when the previous owner was emptying his garage. Ha!

Thanks!

Yes over the carpet. Kick panels are repo, orignals have speaker holes in them. When installing sill plates it would be best to install all screws loose so you can use an awl to find & center the holes. I also remove the seats on a 67-68. Makes it much easyer.

Original kick panels have speaker holes and screw holes. All that is missing from yours.

If you put down any sound deadener, (boom mat, etc.) trim it away the depth of the sill plates. makes a better fit over the carpet. (trust me I know)

Thanks guys! The padding has three holes but I think only one matched up to a hole in the frame. So I figured something was up. Seats have been out for months now. Using an awl to find the holes though the carpet works well. Access is not the problem just my lack of patients. No additional sound deading material is planned.

Do you have the old plastic kick plates?
you can match up the holes on them to make it easier to find the holes.
I matched mine drilled the 2 holes in the new ones and put them in.
I did have to massage the chrome door plate to Make them fit over the kick plate pinch weld seam cover

A trick to find where the holes should be:
Cut the head off of the right screw and hand-screw it into the holes, leaving a substantial portion sticking out towards you. The remaining head should be a point for best results. Now place the kick panel in place and press firmly against the cut-off screw heads. Remove the kick panel and find the marks left by the cut-off screws. Drill the right size hole and remove the cut-off screws.
