68 Standard Lighting: Brake - Tail Lights (Bulb Upgrade)

I replaced the 1157 bulbs with LEDs (white) off Amazon and I saw no difference.

Note: the original sequential system has been replaced/modernized.

What needs to be done to achieve optimum brightness:

  1. Buy a better quality LED/Plasma bulb replacement?

  2. Do I need to add something mechanical (relay)?

Thank you!

The ones that work, and do they work! are the plasma LED sold by WCCC. They are expensive but way less than buying a new bumper when they can’t see your tail lights.

I have replaced the 1157 bulbs in several cars using the LED’s sold by WCCC. They are very bright and I like them a lot! They take a special sequencer from Vic.

+1 for the WCCC plasma LEDs. Way brighter and more reliable than generic LEDs.

I did the plasma bulbs from WCCC as well. The results are smokin’ hot. (I think you also have to upgrade the flasher as I recall.) I’ve also replaced the front turn signals, side markers and reverse lights with regular LEDs.

Thank you, Mongo!

Any samples of before and after LED’s?

Example video of the before and after install of the WCCC LEDs is on the WCCC website. No, I dont work for them or get any compensation for stating that. I switched to those LEDs after the wiring started going south in my 73 and did not want to wait for a car fire. The reduced current draw is much easier on the ancient wiring harness. The flasher on your car might be different than what I switched to as the reduced current draw caused mine to not sequence.

Thanks for the insight. Your comment regarding reduced current draw is critical information to me and reason enough to make the switch. I have ordered the WCCC LED Plasmas and the relay.

Thank you!

The instrument LED bulbs are a good idea for the same reason.
