68 speakers were located in the centre dash (AM radio), kick panels (AM/FM and AM/8 track), and rear package tray (AM/FM and AM/8 track with deluxe fader feature).
So, speakers were in the rear package tray only if your Cougar came from the factory with “deluxe fader feature”?
I would assume this is an option that would be called out on the Marti?
I have some confusion around this as well. Some cars may have been package tray rather than kick panel speaker with the AM/FM or AM/8 track. I recently acquired a dealer showroom binder, but have not taken the time to look through it. Maybe there’s something in there that will help us (I can schedule/dedicate some time to go over it to see if there’ an answer to our questions).
You could upgrade at the dealer level as well, so it may not show up on a Marti report.
kick panels and rear shelf
My Cougar came from the factory with an AM/FM and the rear package tray has been cut for speakers but no speakers or grills are present.
This past Carlisle one of the items on my shopping list was the correct '68 speaker grills and one Cougar vendor, when I told him what I was looking for, said that '68 Cougars did not get rear speakers even with a factory AM/FM.
Back at the Cougar club tent on the show field I asked Phil Parcells and he said he thought they only got speakers in the dash and kick panels, basically agreeing with the vendor.
He did say, there may have been another option that added on to the AM/FM that got rear speakers and I was thinking maybe this “deluxe fader feature” was what Phil was thinking about.
Either way, it doesn’t look like my Cougar came with the deluxe fader and I am still going to add rear speakers but I am curious as to what is correct and original.
Reproduction rear speaker grills are available from most of the parts retailers. Originals are tougher to get in nice shape and a good price, but they are out there.
Every 67-8 Cougar has the cut-outs for rear speakers and rear defroster, but unless one or more of these options was installed at the factory the package tray was not cut
I haven’t checked recently, but last time I looked most of the vendors were sold out of the repro '68 style speaker grills. I’d prefer nice originals, but I guess there is a reason they are so hard to find - not only damage from the heat but also it looks like this feature that added them onto the stereo is a rare option.
And yes on the metal being stamped/cutout from the factory - that’s why I thought all AM/FM equipped 1968 Cougars got the rear speakers, but apparently not? Maybe Don or someone will add to the conversation.
The masonite/fiber board rear package try on my G has the holes cut out where someone had installed rear speakers - must have been a previous owner.
All '68s came with the wiring in place for rear speakers and a fader (the strange triangular connector under the driver side dash). They were not offered from the factory but were a very popular dealer installed option.
Were they stereo in any configuration> Or not until 69? A fader was not stereo.

All 68 AM/FM were stereo (the FM part). 8 tracks, I believe, were stereo.
67 AM/FM radios were not stereo.
If I remember correctly, the triangular connector is for the rear defogger. I don’t recall seeing two triangular connectors under there but I also haven’t owned a 68 for 14 years so my memory could be foggy on this.

You might be foggy, but I think you are correct on this.
By using the balance control on the 8 track and the fader you can select 1 of 4 speakers. The fader is two mechanically connected potentiometers.
“Potentiometers”… That’s a two bit word if I’ve ever heard one.
You are absolutely right! My bad. The '68 G that Propayne now owns had what looked like factory rear speaker wire in it and the rear window defog and I misremembered it. Sorry for the confusion!
Does the 69 have the same fader options as the 68 ? Does anyone have a picture of that knob ?
I have an odd knob connected to what looks like an old potentiometer on my car that isn’t labeled and I’m wondering if it’s a fader that was either dealer installed or installed by one of the previous owners. One of the POs hacked the dash apart a bit to fit a fancy stereo, but this knob and the solder and stuff seem to pre-date that modification. Maybe the “little old lady” who owned it for its first 30+ years was really into hi-fi despite the AM only radio option
I’m not sure if the 67/68 rear seat fader was avalible with a mono AM radio, but 69 and 70 it was. My 70 CJ car “had” that option. Some of the wiring is still in the car, but hacked up.
Didn’t you used to be some sort of stereo expert too?
Ironic huh… Used to be lots of things. LOL!
