I have a 68 XRY and my pedal goes way down to the floor. It’s been this way since I purchased the car about a year ago and it has brakes and will lock them up but just have a pretty good idea that something is not adjusted right!! It has a Bendix booster and see that the rod going to the master cylinder is adjustable and have a feeling that is my problem. I have not taken anything apart yet but looking at it the studs on the booster are pretty long and clearance behind the master cylinder is not so good with the tower. Any experience here? Does it rotate towards the motor?? can’t come straight back!! cut the studs on the booster down?? show be easy but looks like it’s not.
Before you start ripping, pull the rear drums apart, and make sure the brake lines are soft enough to let fluid through. Not swollen shut. Are you familiar with how to do a brake adjustment?
As I recall, there are three bolts on the engine side of the firewall, and one bolt on the inside of the car. If you end up having to pull the booster and master, keep in mind that you will also have to take the brake pedal push rod apart too. You didn’t specify if the car has a small block or a big block? Also make sure and use a good quality line wrenches, don’t try an open end wrench. Also make sure and work the lines off the master about a half turn at a time. This will help make sure that they can be re-used with the new master.
I have a big block 68 and I find that the master comes off best if you loosen the booster nuts/bolt so the master can rotate a little further inboard to clear the shock tower.
Surprised that they did this! I’m thinking of cutting the studs?
