68 XR7 Exhaust Tips

Question for the more knowledgeable cougar historians out there. I am working on my own XR7 and removing a set of hideous square tips that someone put on the car back in the 1990s most likely. The look better on a truck than a Cougar. My question is, what came from the factory for exhaust tips? Did they tuck under the valance with a downturned pipe? I can’t seem to find a good period photo of the cars to determine what was there originally. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Yes on the downturned pipe. Unless it is a G or GTE

CaliCougar the factory 67-68 single and dual exhaust had a turndown that tucked under the valance as you described. I recently added a set of Mustang GT split tips to my 67 XR7 to give it a GTE look after I removed the ugly chrome torpedo tubes from mine.

If the car had a 289 then it had single exhaust. 390- 2V and 4V (and of course 427 and 428) was the only engine that had factory dual exhaust. See the manual. Most systems had the turn down but those were part of the pipe, not a separate tip.

J code 302 4v?

Royce: Except 302 2v XR7G came with dual exhaust. Any G came with dual exhust. Alway’s an exception.

If I remember correctly my J Code was dual.

The factory did not offer dual exhaust on J codes other than XR7-G’s.

My 68 J code came with all 4 factory hangers in place, but was missing the exhaust when I bought it.
