68 XR7 rear seat upholstery questions............

I’m looking at the Procar bucket seats for my 68 XR7 on the Mustangs Unlimited website. They also sell the matching rear seat upholstery but it’s listed as a 65-67 coupe application. No mention of 68 and later. Does anyone know of this will fit my 68 rear seats? I’ve done a search on MC.net and saw mention that the Cougar rear bottom seat was a little deeper than the Mustangs. And a short piece of vinyl had to be added to the rear of the cover. But not much other info. It would be nice to use the matching material for the back seat covers. I’d just like to know if it’s doable with the 65-67 mustang coupe covers? They also sell a 65-67 convertable rear seat cover if that would be a lot different from the coupe? Thanks, Glenn.

Mustang and Cougar rear seats are different. The base is deeper. Probably the only option you have is to modify what ever you can get. The convertible seat is narrower than the coupe, so that one is out.

Thank you Bill that’s good to know. Shouldn’t be too hard to modify the seat cover then. I thought it was cool they sold the matching back seat cover. Thanks!

I am putting the Porsche seats in the front of the '67 xr7 and they are upholstered to match the Cougar pattern. We just have to finish stripping the old dye off the seats and then redying them to match the rest of the interior.

Bill what are you using to strip the old dye off the seats?

Acetone and Scotch Brite pads. You have to be careful to not get too aggressive.

Interesting. I never heard of that process. Reason I ask my dash was dyed blue and it’s starting to peel in spots. Original color is black and thats what I’m redoing the interior color to. So I need to strip the old blue dye off carefully. Same thing with the console except it’s blue dye over the original Dark Ivy Gold. :astonished: With the textured finish on the console pad it might be harder to strip off. I have new black XR7 door and rear qtr interior panels. Those should look good hopefully. Interior redo is one of my spring projects. It gets expensive real fast.

I would not try to use stripper on plastic or vinyl. The seats I am working on are leather. The acetone won’t remove all of the dye, just the top layers. Basically the scotch brite pads are to rough up the leather in a very subtle way to break the surface layer up enough to let the new dye permeate the leather. My guess is that you will end up doing something like this, but I don’t know how the acetone will react to the plastic and vinyl.

Got ya thanks. Yes the acetone could fog/melt the plastic and vinyl. I also have a few milder chemicals I can try. Funny in the printing trade acetone was banned from use here long ago. Just to harsh of a chemical and just plain old nasty stuff. But you can still use it in a nail salon. I have a ink deglazer that will remove layers of paint from anything cast iron or aluminum. Better than any paint stripper I’ve used.

Hey Bill have you ever seen or used the stock front and rear vinyl seat cover sets from WCCC? I see they are out of stock now but looked nice for the money. Also what is the difference between the 67 and 68 XR7 vinyl sets if anything? Pattern maybe? Don’s site just had the same picture of the front seats for both years. I’d love to buy leather covers but it’s way more than I can afford.

I have not used them, but I have seen them installed in a '67. They looked pretty good, but easily identified as not being leather.

The seat backs on 67 are different from 68. There is more padding at the top and the back of the seat. I think the rears are the same, but Don would know for sure. Don and I have been bugging the guys that make the vinyl ones to do them in leather, bit so far no luck. If they were mass produced in leather they would really come down in price.

Thanks Bill. That would be cool if they made the seat covers in leather! Maybe someday?? It seems my front seats are 67’s as they have the added padding you mention. Dash pad is from a 67 without the VIN cutout (was fun at DMV) in it. I will check with Don as you suggested.

I got that back wards… The '68 seats have the additional padding. They also have the seat back release on the side. The hole for the release is not there on replace ment covers for either year, you have to locate and cut out the hole you need.

Well that’s good to hear I have 68 seats then. Good tip on the release hole in the cover to thanks.
