So I put on the ram air flapper and seal on the baseplate and went to shut the hood. The hood won’t close all the way. Now I do understand that the foam seal is new and not that flexible. I looked and my engine and it does seem to sit high although the is the first big block Cougar I have owned. The hood will close fine with just the base plate. I know the motor mounts were replaced and they do appear to be stock. Anybody else encounter this? I love this website, where else can you ask such specific questions and get assistance!
Are you using the stock intake manifold and or carb base plate?
Good point. It is the stock intake, I don’t think there is a spacer but I will take a look
Which seal are you using? 69-70 Cougars have their own specific seal that is very very hard to come by (SeanSD will agree). It is very close to the hood and does rub on the underside bracing, yours probably needs to compress being new. If it is a Torino new seal it probably is way to tall.
I got it from WCCC so I’m pretty sure it is the right one. How do you go about compressing it? I don’t want to damage the hood.
That is a 71-73 mustang seal and is close to the size of the original. It should compress with the hood closed. Others might have had more experience with using new seal. Again double check no spacer under the carb and as long as the right air cleaner base it shouldn’t be a problem. Any questions I can try to give you the best answer, my stuff is all factory original if you want to compare.

It’s the same repro those of us with a 68 1/2 428CJ have to use. Just slam the hood.
Great car you got there…I also have the same car - sort of - its a 1969 428CJ XR-7 R/A 4 speed coupe…under restoration - let the fun begin…one thing i noted- on the hood - it might have been replaced at some point - it should have a cut out if its a factory R/A car - like others said- be sure to get your marti report…enjoy !!
Wow a kindred spirit! Yes you are right the hood was replaced at some point. I suspect relatively early in the car’s life. The underside is painted the same color as the car (dealer job?). It had hood pins and the holes are still in the core support. Maybe a tree branch fell on it since the core support is not damaged-hey it happened to me once! The Marti report shows it was a ram air / hood pin car. I got the template from WCCC and will cut out the the hood. Nervous about cutting a hole in a perfectly good hood, though. Until then I am going to lower the hood and put some weights on it to try to compress the seal.
