69 428CJ Eliminator

Hello,

I have a 428 Eliminator still under restoration and it has not been started for about a year now, I just put all new synthetic oil in it but before I start it should I just pull the coil wire and crank the engine over for a few seconds to get the oil flowing or should I pull the distributor to prime the engine ?

Thank you !!

If you have the tools to pull the distributor and turn the pump it is worth it especially if the engine has never been run. Pulling the coil wire is not the best. Removine all the spark plugs is better. Reason is the srtess on the starter motor from prolonged use to pump up the oil pressure against the compression stroke. Using synthetic oil to break in a motor can be expensive. First oil should be drained after the initial 30 minute run and inspected. I’ve aways used a conventional motor oil for break in.
I would do both. Pull the distributor and the plugs. Spin the distributor then spin the motor.
If it is a seasoned motor that has miles but hasn’t been started in a year, i would probably just fill the bowl and start it.

If you have never broken a motor in you need to find someone who has. Most cam manufacturers require strait weight 30W oil for break in. You can download instructions from any of their web sites. Synthetic oil won’t work, you will ruin the engine and have to pull it.

Thanks for the response, the engine has been run on a dyno years earlier, I try to run the engine every month or two but this year I forgot to run the engine and a year went by before I realized it.
So the engine is already broken in, the oil I use is Royal Purple 10/30 with Zinc for flat tapped cam, should I still pull the distributor and prime the oil pump ?

Thanks so much

Hi Royce

See my response to Since1980 who replied to my question.

Thank you

The worst wear occurs on cold start up. Any lubrication help the bearing surfaces can get is always a plus in my book. I say yes. Broken in motor starts at 1K miles road time. Not exceeding a certain rpm before 500 miles is common. Filling a new oil filter before installation is helpful.
