I’m having to replace my old “smashed down” wheelhouses on my 69’ convertible and looked high and low for an alternative but can’t seem to find one, so I came up with my own. I’ve cut out a “pocket” for the convertible top that should work on a 69/70 Cougar or Mustang.
I’m sure there is other ways of doing this, but this is what I’ve come up with vs. the “gorilla smash”.
After measuring how far down the factory smashed the wheelhouse down, the average seems to be about 3 3/4 up from the upper line on the inner wheelhouse indention. I used the part of the convertible well to mark the outer cut to allow the top to lay in the pocket. I used 22 gauge metal to make the mod, but 20 gauge may be better for welding.
Here are some pics. I have some templates I made that I can scan and send if anyone is interested.
