69 & 70 Dearborn undercarriage restoration help/guide

Since so many of the details of Mustangs (same year and plant) are shared with their brother the Cougar I thought I would share these here also. Have been posted/shared on the ConcoursMustang, Boss 302 and 428CJ sites already. Often don’t share these articles outside of the CMF site.

This is an article I’ve written and rewritten a dozen times over 20 years. Found it was easier to have a prepared document when I got questions related to the subject rather than going trough the whole thing every time. It proved to be a challenge as your always discovering new details, sub patterns and such along the way so it has only been share privately in the past since I never felt it was finished.

Also just limiting the coverage to one area of the car was sort of difficult when you want to help and describe everything that was going on at that point at the car plant. See allot of related requests here so thought it would be a good time to try and wrap it up then focus on some of the other years and plants. Hope some here find it useful in there related endeavors.

Of course there are a couple of differences. The unused dally shadow at the back of the car would be in front of the used one on both sides. Often the amount of floor and front wheel well sound deadener was a bit heavier but this is a generalization. Thing that’s the only differences I can think of

Thanks for looking

Wow thanks for posting! Anything for the 68?
I’m surprised at what I’ve learned from the latest project. Nothing like having a “blueprint” so to speak.:yum:

Not at this time, neither San Jose or Dearborn since they would both be different And the GTE would differ from the non GTE cars and the Mustangs I mainly focus on. Normally it takes more than 100 examples to get the details, variables and production practices for each month/production periods.

Basically working through all 8 years and 3 different plants so 24 separate articles if I can get enough original cars from each. Working form the most popular since that is where the demand is. The 69 and 70 Dearborn helps with the Shelby, Boss 302 and Mustang requests. Next is likely the 65-67 San Jose since that will cover allot of Mustangs and all the early Shelbys. In the mean time others will need to study original cars like the ones we post on CMF that match their car’s plant, and production period.

\Yes wanted something I could carry into a shop, show and explain what was done originally with a limited number of illustrations and pictures of original car details. For these sorts of visits normally a CD including a 100 or so pictures supporting the details is included. Its still interesting that about 60-80% of the shops throw their hands up in the air stating they can’t do all that work and the owner sometimes moves the car to another business or decides its much more than they intended for the car and their pocket book

Thanks very much for posting/making this available Jeff. I will probably never get my car to that level of detail, but you never know!
I will use it however to review my car and see how things match up based on what you have put together.

Well good luck finding 100 examples of the GTE!
If you or anyone else is interested in pics or documenting a GTE , 543072 would be a good one to start with.

Thanks Again,Jeff

Mike

Of course smaller runs can mean we pull from a smaller number but similar or higher percentage. If the car is restored then its not used - only unrestored. Currently have over 100,000 pictures and about 100 gigs being used

Jeff

I was referring to this one.

I’m sure there are finer examples out there, but getting pics.,might be harder to obtain.

Thanks for the clarification. Haven’t spent as much time with the Cougars as with the Mustang/Shelby cars so not aware of the better (for this sort of detail cars) and don’t have the decades of pictures collected from them. Have been blessed over the years since many owners sharing pictures through email, forum posts and even CDs from around the world when they disassembled their unrestored cars. This has helped clarify the details I’ve been able to collect through wrecking yard, restoration shop visits and inspecting cars for purchase and restorations.

Again thanks

Cool. Thanks!

Great stuff Jeff, thanks!
