69/70 quarter panel differences

Hey guys & gals,
I’m in the looong process of doing a rest mod on my 69’ convertible. Long story short, I’ve been waiting for the Dynacorn parts to come out for the 69/70 and it seems that the quarters that are out are measured for a 70’. I could be wrong, but just what I’ve been reading. Just before the Dynacorn 1/4s were released, I came across some 70’ quarters complete with inner and outer wheel houses. I could never find the differences in the 69/70 quarters until now that I have both 69’ and 70’ quarters, and I thought I would share my experience.

  1. I’ve always read that the 70’ wheel opening is 1’ wider than the 69’, and this is true. On the 69’, the wheel opening is 30.5", and the 70’ is 31.5".
  2. I know the inner wheelhouses for both years are the same.
  3. The 69’ outer wheelhouse will fit the 70’ with very little persuading. I needed to replace the passenger side outer wheelhouse on the 70’ quarter because of rust and happened to have a NOS 69’ outer. The difference between the years is actually the wide part at the rocker and rear quarter. At the rocker, the 69’ is 2’ wide, and the 70’ is about 1.75". At the rear, the 69’ is 3" wide, and the 70’ is 2" wide. I had to section both ends to make the 69’ work on the 70’, but it came out just right.
  4. In order to make the 70’ work on a 69’, the rocker panel on the 69’ needs to be shortened 5/8" to 11/16". The rocker on the 69’ from the door jamb/“B” pillar to the wheel opening is 14". The 70’ measures approx. 13 1/4". I know the numbers seem to be a little off, but you have to test fit everything to get it close.
  5. As I said, the inner wheelhouse on both years WILL interchange with no problem. The outer wheelhouses ARE different. The 69’ can be narrowed to fit the 70’ but 70’ to 69’ would be some more work.

Here are some pics. I want to label the pics, but can’t seem to figure out how. The red oxide pics are the 69’ and the black pics are the 70.

Awesome! Thanks for the detailed breakdown!

Also note- the rear convertible quarters are different than that of the coupe. On a convertible run you hand along the top edge from the door back, and you will find a small dip in the panel, which is not there on the coupe.

Good to know. I cut mine off 4” below the body line. That seemed like the best place to cut it so a hammer or dolly can get behind the panel. One tight spot that’s around the wheelhouse, but I got to it.
