69 Brake System Overhaul - It was parked for a long time

I’ve been going over my new Cougar daily since I brought her home, and the first priority after getting basic safety equipment working so she will pass inspection is the brakes. She’s a 69 with factory power front discs, and I want to keep the car original. I’m looking for a complete kit to rebuild from front to rear. Unfortunately, all I am finding are partial kits or disc conversion kits.

The master cylinder and the front part of the Bendix booster look wet and have turned orange, so I have leaks that are critical. From a basic inspection I have mostly 53 year-old parts down the line to the shoes/pads. I need replace everything from the cylinder, booster, proportioning valve, etc…etc…back to the calipers and rear drum wheel cylinders, adjusters, and springs.

Anyone know where I can find that kit, or a complete inventory so I don’t end up mid repair and a two week wait on shipping?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide

I bought the full set of parts and did exactly what you are talking about for my ‘68. Got everything from West Coast Classic Cougar and it all fit right and works perfectly.

You can also buy everything from the parts store. Calipers. Master & slave cylinders, pads springs, Ford used them well into the 70’s on a lot of cars & trucks.I went with a rebuild of the brake booster from WCCC, second hardest part to remove from the car. I did get the braided lines from WCCC. Pay attention to the orientation of the bleeders on the front calipers, or they will never bleed completely, don’t ask…

I should add that I rebuilt the calipers myself with the $3 parts store kit and they work great.

Thanks all for the info. With additional parts likely available locally, I can avoid my biggest concern which was having it all torn down and then waiting on shipping.

I have to know. What was the first?

Heater Core, They send that down the line and build a car around it!

And here I always thought that removing the cowl was the worst job!

I have done all three, but if I had a choice the booster would be easy one.
what makes the booster a pain is fooling with the M/C and lines.

i have to admit, I haven’t done a Cowl. I think the 67/68 are much harder than my 69. all I can say is don’t schedule any thing else the day you decide to attack a brake booster. Heater Core, Watch the video about 12 times and give yourself a week.

I would much rather work under the hood than under the dash.

No lie, interior work is hard on the back.

You know its not an easier today then it was back then either. Still gotta yank a whole dash to replace a heater core or EVAP core on most vehicles today

When I did my Brake Booster, I removed the Drivers Seat after about an hour of squeezing under the steering wheel. I realized it was only 4 nuts.

made it soooo much easier.
