I am finishing some work on my '69 convertible. I never found the center sun visor mounting bracket when trying to finish the interior. I looked on WCCC’s website and they were currently out of stock, so I ended up ordering one from NPD. They showed P/N 04132-1A as compatible with the “69 Cougar. The center to center hole distance is 1” on the car and 1 1/8" on the bracket. I can slot the bracket slightly to compensate and center the screws, but the holes in the window frame have no threads and are 1/4 in diameter, much larger than the thread diameter in the provided mounting screws.
Does anyone know how the factory mounted the bracket? I can put in a riv-nut insert to fasten the bracket but hoped I’d get some insight from someone who has worked on this piece. Thx
I’m not an expert on the convertible model, but keep in mind the sun visor bracket was different in 1968, as compared to 1969 and again ( for some appllications ) in 1970. Some crossover in part numbers from 1969 into 1970 ( C9AZ p/n was found in both the coupe and the convertible ) and the 1970 convertible has some D0ZZ ( Mustang ) specific p/n’s ( body code 76 ). Without the prefix of 65 or 76 in the part number, it is hard to know if the NPD parts with the basic 04132 were for the coup or the convertible, and whether those different part numbers only reflect differences in available colors. I noted in the 1972 MPC, for 1969 their were 8 different colors for the bracket available ( coupe ) and 6 for the convertible. In 1970 there were 7 ( coupe ) and again 6 for the convertible.
The fact that a different part number was listed for coupe vs. convertible might account for the 1/8" difference you have encountered with the screw hole spacing. I do know that on my 1969 coupe the screws are just that, screws, small interior trim type - nothing special and certainly not with thick threads. I will check later today for the screw spacing dimensions.
Perhaps someone with a convertible can help you with those spacing measurements, since the part numbers for the convertible do show a unique ( 76 ) p/n prefix.
Can you tap the 1/4" holes and put in an aluminum “plug” with the permanent thread locker? Then drill into the aluminum and tap for a machine screw with a head that looks like the trim screw and on 1 1/8" centers.
I wonder if the previous owner was starting down that path as a solution.
Looks like I’ll have to improvise with this car. Wouldn’t be the first time! I’ll probably go the riv-nut route and clearance the plastic bracket so it fits flush against the frame.
What if you epoxied a small steel plate to the back side of the stainless windshield trim plate? Then you could drill and screw into that from the front through the larger holes. As I recall, there is decent clearance behind that trim plate in some areas.
Hi relentless. I have a 69 Vert center mount for the sun visors. It’s Black but pretty faded and has some scratches. So, the mount would need dyed / painted to look presentable on your Cat. Ford P/N C9AB-7604132-BW. If wanted…the bracket is yours for the shipping cost. You’re welcome to send a text, and I can send a couple of phone pics of the bracket your way. 765- Six Six One - Three Zero Seven Eight.
Thanks Gary for your kind offer. I took a couple pictures of the windshield frame where the visor clip mounts. As you can see, the window frame is bare metal and I can’t see anything that would make me think it has been modified.
So again, the metal frame has two round holes 1/4" diameter and 1" apart center to center. The bracket I have is probably for a coup rather than a convertible. I need to locate my shop manual and see what it shows. I don’t have an assy manual tho.
So sorry, my memory failed me again. I just pulled my visor bracket off and my stainless trim looks just like yours. The holes in the stainless trim are indeed 1/4” diameter. The holes in the metal windshield frame underneath are the 3/32” threaded holes I was remembering. But all holes including in the plastic visor bracket are 1 1/8” (not 1”) apart.
“The holes in the metal windshield frame underneath are the 3/32” threaded holes I was remembering.”
So, is my car missing the windshield frame underneath? What do the two sheet metal screws in your picture screw into? My windshield frame looks hollow.
