Hello,
I know this topic comes up all the time in this forum. I’ve read many of those posts and am looking for some additional help/information.
I’m trying to re-install factory air into my 69 cougar that was taken out by a previous owner. I’m to far into this that I’m not considering going to a aftermarket setup like original air or similar company. To date I’ve got my under dash AC/Heater box and components all buttoned up ready to go. Both the evaporator and heater core are sticking through the firewall ready to be hooked up.
The under the hood portion is what I’d like some help with. Does anyone have a comprehensive list of parts that I’ll need to complete this installation? I’m basically starting from scratch as everything was removed before I got the car.
With the help of this forum I’ve so far collected the correct bracket(s) and york compressor. But that’s all I have right now. Parts that I’ve seen on WCCC that I think I need are included below. Would like to hear your thoughts, any feedback is appreciated. Been buying most of my parts off WCCC but if there’s better or cheaper alternative elsewhere I’m happy to look there as well.

idler and adjusting pulleys?
Wiring to compressor?
Thank you for your input. I lumped the idler in with the brackets, so I do have that one.
I will need to get the wiring to the compressor. Do you have any additional thoughts, are all the parts I put in my original message needed for this installation?
thanks,
Joey
I am never completely sure.
Things like this is, is like going to Home Depot. There is always going to be one or two forgotten things. My record is 4 trips in one day.
If I recall correctly the compressor wire you need is just a simple one wire section with plugs at both ends that run from the firewall plug to the short wire with plug that is part of the compressor.
Don’t know what engine your car has since that was not included but there are lists of parts needed for the change over using factory parts listed in the MPC. Your looking for the dealer installed engine kit rather than interior kit since those are for the under dash assemblies/style heads. Compressors sometimes differ from assembly line ones and depending on when the kit was made so do other items as far as details but the list of needed parts, down to nuts, bolts and clips are included. Not perfect but should provide some additional information
The came in boxes like the example shown below

Scott, yeah doing my best to avoid all the trips especially because I don’t really know what I’m doing. Picked up this hobby as COVID gave me more time at home.
J_Speegle that’s really helpful. Thank you. I didn’t know they still sold entire NOS kits like that. Using the part number on that box, I found one that would work for me on ebay for a whopping $750. I have a 302 in mine. A lot more then I thought I needed to spend but maybe that’s a lot easier then trying to order separately.

Maybe someone on this forum has the kit that would be willing to take less then $750. anyone out there with one?
Thanks,
Joey
302 takes a different lateral bracket than the 1969 351W. No 302’s in a 1969-73 Cougar unless it was a Boss 302. Boss 302’s did not receive A/C from the factory. The 351 lateral bracket has a longer tab for the one bolt.
The one for the 1968 with 302 should work, unless you have a much newer 302 or 5.0.

The car originally came with a 351W but a previous owner put a 302 ford crate engine in it. But still used the 351 brackets which made things off. I got some 302 brackets from an engine in a junkyard recently which I planned on using. But that ebay kit comes with new brackets so at least I’ll know I have everything. I bit the bullet and re-financed my house to buy the full kit. Haha
Probably a wise decision. My three rules of consumerism:
- Buy the best and only cry once.
- Go big or go home.
- It’s the stingiest man who pays the most.
A little thread resurrection here: I’m in a similar situation with my ‘69 351W/FMX/factory A/C Base Cougar.
The prior owner pulled the original 9.48” deck 351W when the oil pump let go and spun bearings. According to the PO, a friend had a 351W (should be a 9.500” deck) from an early ‘80s F-Series that is now living between the shock towers. They didn’t bother to swap the front accessory drive over, they eliminated all of the underhood A/C components and brackets, they didn’t swap the water pump and didn’t bother to hook heater hoses up. I’m now trying to undo this stupidity.
jrainey4, What configuration of brackets/idler pulley are you running? I’m thinking I need the C9OZ-2888-B Lateral Support Bracket to not only mount the A/C Compressor, but also properly mount my P/S pump. It’s the original ‘69 P/S pump with a combo of ‘69 brackets (pump side), ‘80s truck brackets (engine side) and a home built extension tab that puts the pump’s adjustment pivot and the adjustment slot in 2 different arcs. I can’t get the P/S belt tight and the pulley alignment is jacked. What idler pulley do I need?
I have a correct timing cover and RH inlet water pump that came with the correct alternator bracket/adjuster so I’m thinking I only need the little cast offset/stand-off bracket C9ZE-10A336-A to button up that side.
I also have the correct 2 sheave crank pulley for a ‘69 A/C 351W.
I’m wanting to set up the front accessory drive minus the A/C compressor and components so I can cruise the car this summer (Power Tour ‘21 the end of August is the goal) and finishing finding the A/C stuff and refurbish the interior A/C components over the winter. I’m trying to buy the parts I need to do this right once and keep moving towards the end goal without buying parts I’ll only need for a few months. I’ve attached photos of the mishmash of pieces-parts of what I have right now if anything attached to the engine is ‘69 parts.
