69 Cougar XR7 R code car

Hi guys. I’m new to this community. Thanks for letting me join.

I’m in the process of buying a restore project. It’s a 1969 Cougar XR7 R code car. Originally red with black interior. Originally came with a 428 Cobra Jet. I want to have it dipped and sealed before putting it back together. My question is how many of them were made. And how can I tell what number it came out on the production line. When it’s complete professionally restored all original matching numbers. How much would this car be worth?

Welcome.
You can find out all of the production specs by getting a Marti report. You will want the deluxe report to get production numbers.

Sounds like you are doing a full restoration so it is very unlikely that you will get your money out of it. Don’t worry though, no one ever expected to get their money out of a bass boat or playing amateur golf.

If you need one of those big numbers to show the wife, then check this out: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Mercury-Cougar/193759380803?hash=item2d1cf58543:g:A94AAOSwt2lfNvyP

There is absolutely no way anyone can tell you what a car will be worth following restoration. There is probably close to 100% certainty that it will be less than what it cost to create. You might want to call KTL restorations and get some ball park numbers from them on restoration cost.

Welcome to the forum, stick around and you can learn a lot.
It all depends on what condition the car is in now and how much time and money you have to spend. If you are going to keep the car it doesn’t matter, if you are fixing it to resale then you wont know until it’s sold what it’s worth.

I do have the Marti report.
I’m not sure if it’s the deluxe version. Where would I look on it to find out what number it came off the product line?

As far as how much I’m going to put into it I’m guessing probably around 20,000 to 30,000
From what I’ve been told and researching this car if professionally restored could bring in between 80 and 110,000. This is not considered the eliminator version of the cougar. because the eliminators didn’t start on the product line until the latter part of 69. This one is considered I think they call it the rally sports version. Which is basically the eliminator but they didn’t call it that until the latter part of 69. Which makes it more rare for what I’ve been told. I’ve been told that there’s only about 300 of them ever made.

Gonna try to keep this short. If this is the red car from NW, then if i remember correctly, missing engine/trans and maybe rear end? putting together a complete dated 428 CJ can cost $20k by itself. Just the ram air setup is $2.5-$3k. Currently building a 69 scj eliminator that is missing whole drivetrain. Have spent $30k on parts so far not including car and havent touched the interior and still dont have a complete drivetrain. Dont mean to be a debbie downer just have to be realistic. Take what you expect to spend and 2-3x it

I just finished up a 1969 XR7 4 speed R code. There were 139 of those made, I have it insured for 60,000. Maybe it’s worth more maybe not really won’t know unless I try to sell it. It was a lot of fun though and it came out great!

There were 504 XR7 R code hardtops. Post the door data tag information and with a complete description maybe we can narrow it down more.

Knowing how rare the parts are, you should post a wanted list. I have never seen CJ parts go down in price so getting those accumulated now will save you money and time.

Hello fellow R code restorer! Sounds like your car needs more work than mine, hopefully most of the parts are there. Be thankful that Mustangs can furnish most of the mechanical pieces. I found interior stuff to be the most difficult since mine is the green XR7. Like the earlier posting stated you generally put out far more than the car is worth, but it’s a labor of love! My recommendation is to do good estimate of what you are likely to spend doing the whole dip & reassembly vs. just putting it back together to drive and enjoy. I had a friend start a “frame off”, dipped the car and then lost interest in doing the car because of the time and money involved. It’s your car do what you are most comfortable with.
