I have been working on some things with Pole Cat and one of the items on my list when it gets a little warmer is the grill alignment. I found one thread that discussed this briefly and learned that there are some bushings for the light covers but would like to know more. First the picture:
It seems to me that the grill itself is made of three parts, left section, center section and the right section. Then of course there are the covers of the lights, eyelids?
Are the left and right sections adjustable?
Looking at the picture the left and right sections appear to need adjustment or is it all in the light covers?
I think light cover (expecially the DS on yours) adjustments will go a long way. There is not much in the way of adjustment otherwise but some holes in the potmetal pieces are elongated as I recall. To adjust the doors, you loosen the sheet metal nuts that hold the potmetal to the sheet metal door frame and then move it as needed and tighten. You can actually do this with the hood open and the doors shut with the right (long for the bottom nuts) wrench, or at least on Isabel you can. I have Hella light housings with H1/H4’s and the glass fronts are flat, this might provide an advantage in Isabel’s case.
The left and right adjustment is done when they are mounted to the car. It may be the angle of the picture, but it looks like your grill droops a little on the outer ends. The center may be high also. When I assembled mine, I got the center where I wanted it then tried to get the left and right sections as level as I could with that filler piece above the bumper. Once you have that, you can align the headlight covers.
Generally the cause of a slightly lifted eyelid is a warped rag joint. They become warped from constant spring tension over the years or from someone putting a used one that has stretched on a PS to a DS or DS moved to the PS position. Are yours egg shaped or perfectly round?
Thanks Gents, I will look when I get home. Don, I probably would not have considered the rag joint but will look. Looks like I will start with said rag joint and bushings then see if I can straighten the two sides to be parallel to the piece behind the bumper. It will need to get warmer in the pole barn before I actually do this. Maybe this weekend will warm things up.
