I’m tearing down a 69 tilt column to access sloppy u-joints on the upper drive shaft. Do I have to remove the release spring rod (cable), spring, spring cover and retainer, before I pull the upper pivot pins ? I’m hoping to avoid spring and retainer removal, as I have found it difficult to compress this spring for reassembly. Thanks !

YES you do need to take the spring etc apart to get at the U-joints. Not a job for rookies.
If you get too deep, please advise and you can send the column and parts to me to rebuild for you. I have special tools I developed to make the job happen. I’m not inexpensive, but I can do the job for you.
