So basically the 80-93 is compatible
Either is. AOD does not require a computer. If you want to use an AODE or 4R70w, then you will need a computer.
If you are using AOD, go for 86 to 93. The early ones had a lousy valve body. Ford got it working better by 86.
Awesome, thank you
So what are all the items in a list that I need also will my headers clear?
Buy the latest model year AOD you can find, torque converter, flywheel, rear support and mount, and Lokar TV cable.
I only had to cut 1in. off the front yoke of the stock driveshaft, and my long tube headers cleared the bell-housing.
If anyone can think of anything I forgot, chime in.
Does all of this work with a 69 351W and FMX as well?
Yes it does, you can use the flywheel that is on your engine now (if it is 164 tooth) and the AOD and torque converter will bolt right up.
Go to summitracing.com and look up these two numbers, KD-2AODU72 and sum-770328 you will need them.
Alright thank you
I bought the aod yesterday for $150
If it hasn’t already been rebuilt, chances are it will need something as it was 24 years ago the last time an AOD was built. If not stored properly, transmissions tend to expire like a loaf of bread.
I’m gonna put it in the car and see how it does, than after that if it needs to be rebuilt, I’ll get it done
I think I would go for the rebuild first. If you don’t do it yourself, you will STILL save some coin by having it out of the car.
What does the fluid smell like? If it doesn’t have a burnt odor I’d tend to go with doing to swap first and see how it performs. If it needs rebuild, it’ll be a little extra work to do the R&R again. One thing is I’d rather make an installation mistake with a used $150 dollar trans versus making a mistake with a fresh rebuild that may cost $1000.
That makes a lot of sense. Pulling it a second time is work but not that bad. Then again, if I was going anywhere near $1k on a tranny swap, it would be to a manual
Did you get the torque converter?
Yes
Got the transmission in aND it wasn’t shifting right because he has never adjusted one and didn’t wanna mess something up. I got it down to Aamco and they are going to adjust it on Monday. I didn’t need to buy the kit that everyone says you need to. You don’t need a different crossmember. Flip the original on over. The exhaust cleared. Used the aod yoke. Also didn’t need the lokar cable. The car had one already. I didn’t even think to look. It was $600 to have it installed. $95 for Aamco to adjust the transmission. Bought 2 gallons of fluid and needed another quart. Bought lucas transmission fluid conditioner and the fliter and pan gasket. All this was about $50. The transmission was $150. Total build cost roughly is about $900.
That install price seems a little high, but I guess it depends on what pat of the country you are in, anyway, glad you( got er done) enjoy.
One more thing, what rear gear are you running?
Not sure, I think 3.00 I’ll have to check
No matter what part of the country you’re in, it’s still 2017.
