70 Cougar AOD conversion w/ FMX tranny question

It’s 2017 here in my town also, but no one charges $600 to install a trans.

He only charges $350, he did the whole conversion. I took the transmission there and drove the car away., didn’t do anything else.

Prices depend on what part of the country you are in. In my home town of Danville, IL, a lot of places are still only charging $40/hr for labor rates while here in Georgia labor rates are $90-$110/hr. It’s relative to the economy in that area and what people are willing to spend. Same goes for car prices. the sme '07 Camry that I spent $32,000 in Georgia I found at Rusty Wallace Toyota in Knoxville, TN for $21,000.

What cost $4000 to paint my Cougar in Danville, Il would have easily cost twice that in Metro Atlanta.

True, I’m in Delaware so things are somewhat cheap

What are the symptoms for valves sticking? I took the car to Aamco and they say that the tv cable is already adjusted all the way out. If you are easy on the throttle at about 25 the car acts like it’s in neutral. If you step on it, it will shift up and but than again at higher speeds it does the same thing, at low rpms it doesn’t want to move. Aamco is pulling the pan to check if it’s a sticking valve. What do you guys think? I know some will say I should have got it rebuilt from the start.

By “adjusted all the way out”, what do you mean? For the TV cable to function properly, it must move in a 1:1 relationship with the throttle. Make sure there is no slop when you move the throttle. I’m not sure I would trust Aamco when you’re dealing with a custom application. Once you have verified that the cable is set properly, then start looking elsewhere.

Should the presource at idle be 0 than you set the tool on in between the cable stopper and the bracket and check to see if it’s a 35 pounds?

That’s what the instructions say but I’ve not had good luck that way. I got a piece of advice a number of years ago about tightening the TV cable so it moved exactly in step with the throttle and I’ve never had a problem since doing that. I set it using the pressure gauge and had to have it rebuilt a few miles after doing that.

Interesting I will see what they say

Mark… Will the Super Coupe slip yoke work with a 69 FMX driveshaft? The last time I did the FMX to AOD conversion I used a 85 Mustang GT slip yoke.

If it’s 3 1/4" between clips.

No matter what part of the country you’re in, it’s still 2017.

Is that for all cars? Or just cars that are 40+ years old? How do you know what everyone charges?

The point is, there are places that charge enough to do the job properly with quality parts and a warranty that they stand behind. And, there are low ballers that cut corners and dig up excuses while trying to make due with bad equipment and no resources. Since most people don’t know what’s really involved, the only comparison they can make is price. Which is fine and dandy when comparing price on something that comes out of a box from the same assembly line at two different stores. But, not for price on service.

First: Did Aamco install this trans?

\

  1. Many.
  2. Sounds like an excuse for not knowing how to properly adjust the cable.
  3. It sounds like cable too loose.

Did it have this symptom when you drove away from the shop? Or, did it occur after driving X amount? Two sides of a bad penny: Either the trans was bad and all the adjustments were done right. Or, the trans was good and got bad from not being adjusted properly. Was the pan removed to check for debris accumulation and if things look good install a new filter? If they didn’t, then the trans is a mystery. Even trans that look o-k in the pan may not work properly. The pan doesn’t show valve wear, pump wear, hardened rubber or parts that snapped clean.

There was debris in the pan, the guy before me only had it to 25 and that’s when IT had issues. Aamco didnt install it someone else did that I know. They are 1/2 mile from aamco. The problem existed when I drove it to aamco. They spent 3.5 hours this morning trying to get it to work and couldnt. I’m having it rebuilt for $1500. That’s everything upgraded too

Bummer that it is costing ya more. But, you’ll be happy with it when it’s done.

Thanks Mark…

more questions…

I need to order my torque converter and will be going with a non-direct drive torque converter because I hate the engagement of OD from the factory direct drive setup. What stall torque converter would you recommend for a stock 69 351 4V with 3.50 rear ration?

Can you recommend a builder for a non-direct drive converter which utilizes the stock dual input shaft configuration? In the past I have utilized LenTech and Dirty Dog. I’m looking for someone somewhat local in Florida.

Have you tried Florida Torque Convertor? I just bought one from them and had it shipped here to GA for my e4OD. Have had it in my truck for 2 1/2 yrs now and even with some pretty heavy loads, it works great. I wouldn’t go much higher than 2000-2200 rpm on the convertor. If you’re running stock, I don’t know that I would go very high with stall speed. If you plan on installing a hotter, by hotter I mean 224-230 degrees at .050 lift, you might need a little more stall than 2200. But other wise stock to 2200 max would be my recommendation. With the stock short duration cam, you really don’t need a higher convertor flash to get the car moving. 2000-2200 would get you a little better holeshot, but I wouldn’t necessarily see any real necessity in going higher than that with a stock engine.

Thanks for the information on Florida Torque Converters. Called them and building what I’m looking for is no problem. I will be getting a stock AOD stall with non-direct drive utilizing the dual input shaft configuration.

No problem. I like to try and use people that are close to home that build their stuff in house and don’t source it to other places. I will definitely use them again. They make a good product, their staff is very helpful, and they stand behind their product.

Update: I got the car back yesterday, ordered a pan from summit with a drain plug and a tci constant pressure valve body which makes it so the tv cable on adjusts shift points. No chance of low pressure. They used a fm55b rebuild torque converter. Friday they are going to readjust the cable for shift points. Shifts firm which is what I wanted but it’s shifting too early into 4th. After its in 4th there’s nothing left. Also 70mph rpms are 1900. 80 is 2000. Very well worth the money
