It’s 2017 here in my town also, but no one charges $600 to install a trans.

Is that for all cars? Or just cars that are 40+ years old? How do you know what everyone charges?
The point is, there are places that charge enough to do the job properly with quality parts and a warranty that they stand behind. And, there are low ballers that cut corners and dig up excuses while trying to make due with bad equipment and no resources. Since most people don’t know what’s really involved, the only comparison they can make is price. Which is fine and dandy when comparing price on something that comes out of a box from the same assembly line at two different stores. But, not for price on service.

All I’m saying is, different parts of the country charge different prices for labor, if you live and work in New York , California and places where the cost of living is high, yes you will pay more than if you live in the south where you make less, why do you think that after people retire from some of these high paying jobs, they move south. Oh to answer your question how do I know what everyone charges, I go and ask
I’m real close to doing this conversion, Monster Transmission has a package that includes pretty much everything you need for about 2 grand (free shipping) does anybody out there have any experience with this company?
They’ve been around a while so I don’t think they are a fly-by-night. I’ve never used anything or have seen their trans in person. The price seems inline for the current era. You may want to check a local trans shop on pricing and if they are willing to get involved with a swap. Service after the sale is way easier when it’s not far away.
Find a trustworthy mechanic, have them do the conversion itself, for me it cost $600. Than take the car to Aamco or a transmission shop you trust and have them rebuild it, upgrade the internals and definitely go with a tci constant pressure valve body. Well worth the $262 knowing that you can’t have a low pressure situation where the cable isn’t adjusted right. Also it helps the transmission shift very well. Don’t think twice about doing the swap just do it trust me it is well worth the money. If you ever want I will give you my number in a message somehow and I will tell you about it on the phone lol.
I’ve gotten a gm transmission from them and a friend of mine did as well. Really easy to work with. It was around 8 years ago that I used them. At the time they had free shipping anywhere in the us, (to the nearest warehouse, not door to door). I live across the line but it saved a fortune having it shipped as close to the border as possible for free. I don’t have the car anymore but my friend is still running his behind a 520hp sbc with no trouble.
The constant pressure valve body is awesome. Put one in my '90 Thunderbird and loved it. Firm shifts, no longer having the kickdown also control line pressure, and not having to worry about cooking my trans if the cable did come out of adjustment. My little fox body tbird would have the 85 mph speedo buried in top gear and be turning around 2200. What speed is it hitting top gear at? under light throttle the AOD in both my tbirds would shift into od around 50 mph, and yes there would be nothing in top gear. You sort of get used to it because it would kick back into third relatively easy. It did get a little annoying hear in Georgia because this place is nothing if not hilly.
Won’t kick down?----from stepping on the gas more? It should come out of OD relatively easily—like not much more than 50% throttle. Perhaps less depending on vehicle speed. What does this trans consist of? Is this a stock trans? Is the cable tight enough?
Your cable is definitely out of adjustment. Should kick out of OD pretty easily, like on a hill etc., Like the post above said 45-55% and it should go to third from OD. I would have someone operate the throttle and see what is going at the trans. I doubt you are seeing much to any movement of the lever at the trans even if the cable is moving. It could be hooked to the wrong hole in the throttle lever at the carb. Are you using a Lokar or similar cable? Send some photos if you could so I can see how they hooked your trans cable. It sounds like they didn’t take it for a shakedown run when they did the install which is kind of a no no as a technician.
Tightened the cable up more at Royal Farms when I got gas and after that it kicked down going a low speed, I will inform you of what happens tomorrow. Also I got 15mpg
Good. Glad to hear you got her kicking down. If you get it in top gear for an extended cruising period of time you will probably notice even better mpg. That situation alone is just one more reason to be glad you have the constant pressure VB. I may take a little touch and go.
Oh alright, she’s parked for right now as I realized that I didn’t have brake lights tonight, measured and had voltage at the brake light switch and replaced it. Tomorrow I will do a couple things to check if it’s the turn signal switch… again.
Mark… The Super Coupe slip yoke measures about 3 5/8" between the universal clips. Is there a universal which can adapt the 3 1/4" driveshaft to the 3 5/8" slip yoke? Would you recommend a setup like this or should I just buy a 3 1/4" slip yoke?
