Hey Guys, Im currently replacing all the front suspension as original except maybe changing from power to manual steer.
Would a Mustang (left hand drive) manual drag link fit a 70 Cougar or what would be the most compatible equivalent?
Cheers
70 Mustang is the exact replacement you need. 69 uses smaller tie rod ends and 71 is a completely different set up.
Along with a manual steer drag link, you will also need to change Pitman and Idler arms for manual steering. You can still use the 16:1 steering box, or change to the stock manual steering 20:1 (19.9:1).
Cheers fellas, would the 16:1 be easier to turn or the 20:1?
Ive never had a muscle car with power steer. I think most of the Aussie GT’s were 16:1 standard.
Harder.
16:1 box is 3-3/4 turns, lock to lock.
20:1 box is 4-5/8 turns.
16:1 steering box with manual steering was known as the ‘quicker steering’. Would put a lot of stress on a tilt column, and probably lots of unplanned honking if you have a rim blow steering wheel.
If you are doing front end work, and are from Sydney AU then dont over look the obvious.
The 65-69 mustang and cougars use the same hardware as the same vintage Falcon.
So i would bet a XA/B falcon would be the same as you 70/- Cougars.
Back in the day a mustang was just a two door variant of the falcon
Yes mate thanks, Ive restored a few falcons but this is the first left hand drive car Ive done.
Ive got a good Mustang place in Sydney, there’s always the odd thing Cougar only but.
