71 429 Vert at Mecum

Wish it was a hardtop, but probably out of my price range either way. Nice looking color combo

Description says “solid lifters”???

Was it originally produced with the hood scoop lettering? Or is it from a Mustang?

Lettering was added by owner. 429 cougars have no identifying emblems etc.
a/c was added since it was unavailable in a 429 convertible

Beautiful car… I thought there was one show car that did get AC. Anybody know about that?

429 SCJ 375hp uses a solid cam, 429 CJ 370hp has a hydraulic cam. The ad doesn’t claim either.

Minor detail, missing the triple pin strips.

Sits up too high in back too!

About the a/c… I found an old listing for this car and it claims the a/c and scj stuff was added after manufacture by ford R&D (at the Utica test track???) so I would take it with a grain of salt.

Ford apparently made one 429/ac convertible but it was white and was a prototype used at the 71 introduction and subsequently destroyed. This info is from an old forum reply by Mitch Lewis so I would assume it’s correct.

So I was looking at this Cougar closer, it looks to have a XR-7 dash and instruments in it, but standard(Decor) door trims and seats. Exterior trim is also standard.

The hydraulic cam engine came with any rear axle gear ratio that was not a V or W. The ad claims it is a 3.50 rear.
