Do any of you know how many 4spd cars were made in these years? Haven’t seen many.
Out of 177,195 total 1971-1973 Cougars, 1,220 came with 4-speed manual trans. according to “Cougar by the Numbers.” That’s only ~ 0.7% of total production, wow.
I got a ride in a very nice black / ginger '73 convertible with the Q code 351 and 4-speed this past fall. Great car. I photographed it for the WCCC calendar, it’s featured in September this year.
My Top Loader is out of one of those 1220. Unfortunately the car was crushed long ago. I believe it was a 71 351C 4V car. There was a '71 429 4-speed convertible that a guy used to show up with at the drag strip in Great Bend, KS. I was thinking that was 1 of 3 or something along those lines.
I remember that 429 car. He used to race at the Tulsa strip as well. I’ve got pictures of it somewhere…

I had a 73 351 cobra jet 4speed top loader.
Welcome back!

That’s a good price. Wonder what the underside looks like.
Wow! I did not realize so few late model Cougars came with 4 speeds. That is really surprising to me.
Another one just hit eBay, too rough for me
I was cleaning up in the garage a little bit this evening and decided to snap a few pictures of my 4-speed. Here’s the tag:
and here’s the casting number:
This ones a little confusing. The David Kee site shows this as a '70-'71 Mustang transmission for 302-4V and 351-4V. The casting number is a '72 number according to convention, but another site said they used the D2AR casting in late '71. The 1B10 casting should mean February 10, 1971. As I stated in an earlier post, this was supposedly out of a '71 351-4V Cougar. According to another site, the RUG AV1 transmission should have a C8AR body casting, but this is obviously not the case (pun intended). Apparently there’s some bad information somewhere.
