71-73 Yoke size

I’m looking to purchase a new 3rd member. I would like to have the stock u-joint but I don’t know the size yoke that is in it. Some come with 1310,1350,1480. What is our stock yoke number?

You could measure the one you have and order the same, maybe this would help!

I have to study that for awhile. I was hoping for a “your car has this”

I noticed when buying a 3rd member. The yokes has different lengths. That too I don’t know. I measured mine at 4 1/4”. I want to buy a 3rd member buy don’t want to install it and have the driveshaft be to short or long and u-joints won’t fit. I live in a small town and to get the correct u-joint or any other part can take weeks.

for your car they only have 4in or 5in yokes, they come in wide or narrow, yours is the short 28 spline, you will have to measure the U joint to find out if it is wide or narrow.

Solved the problem. Bought a 3rd member with no yoke just have to get mine off and install it

I am a few days behind on this, but if you change yokes from one to the other you should use a new crush sleeve and pinion nut and torque to 27 in.lbs of crush. this will take upwards of 150+ foot lbs of torque on pinion nut to get the crush you need.

I put the new 3.50 3rd member in last weekend. It came with instructions and a new nut. Think it was 150 foot pds

So
I took her out for a short ride today after upgrading my 2.75 3rd member to a 3.50
Have some issues! Brakes smell and smoking. I get that. I adjusted them so the drums went on with a little friction. Heat gun says 228 and 198 degrees both drums.
The speedometer is way off. Like 20mph! I get the rpm’s being off but the speedometer?
Do I have to change that small nylon gear at the end of the speedometer cable and if so to which one?

you will have to google and look for speedometer gear calculator, and your RPMs wont be off, they will be higher because of lower gear ratio.

So
Here we go!
Driving around yesterday and my wife said it smells like burning plastic. When we got home I checked the back brake drums with a temperature tool. It said both brake drums were at 245 degrees. I wish but didn’t think about it at the time to check the temperature of the diff case. When I thought of it the temperature was 110 degrees for both brake drums and the diff.
I’m hoping it is just the new brakes acting up and not the new differential. Could it be the new differential making it head up and if so what would cause that?

That smell usually means I left something on the engine that has fallen down against the exhaust manifold while driving. Funnel, screwdriver handle, etc.

To funny! That’s the second thing I checked. Nothing
