I just got her a few weeks ago and have not yet given her a name. I think the color is making it difficult (never been a fan of green) to come up with one. She’ll never be a show car and she’s showing her age, but she’s a fun driver.
The big cats are great drivers. How about badwheels? Just kidding. That is the one thing that stands out.
Have you been through the desert in the cat with no name? ![]()
Hey! Are you commenting on my cheap wheel covers? LOL It came with lowly 14” black OEM steel wheels.
Custom wheels are on the improvements list, but way down below the basic mechanical stuff.
Not yet. Sticking close to home until I’m more confident she’ll hold up. ![]()
Ah yes, familiar with that concern too! Neat car!
Love the Green Fat Cat. I’m new to all this. It seems like alot converts are coming out. What was the percentage were convertibles??? Of the early era…
Here is the book you need to answer questions like that. It shows 1969 was the peak year (also the first) for Cougar convertibles with 9820 convertibles out of 88649 total produced, or 11%
1971 was the lowest year with 3439/59425 or just under 6%.
1973 (the last year for convertibles) was back up to 4450/56179 or almost 8%.
So convertibles were always rare, which makes them more sought out by collectors looking for one.
A type of green was known as Persian. How about Purrsian Cat ?
Will be looking into that catalog of Mercurys.
How about Kermit? It ain’t easy being green! ![]()
Good info. I was told that mine was a rare convertible, but I never looked into why.
Nice looking Cougar. I always like the story on how someone found their classic car. Were you looking for a Cougar or did you happen upon the car for sale and bought it?
Nice looking phatcat
Don’t say never to the car shows, you’ll probably be the only 71-73 cat there . Enjoy the ride and experience. Mine came with the faux wire wheel covers, switched out to keystone Klassics. Do what you like to make it your car
Actually, I’ve just been looking for a toy for about 8 - 9 years now, something to play with in retirement. This came up locally, at a fair price, and was running/driving. I couldn’t put it off any longer. I’m still looking for a 52 - 56 F100. When I find that, I’ll get rid of my Minivan. lol
Oh, I’ll take it to shows, but I’m not interested in making it a show piece. I’d rather have a fun driver with character.
WOW! The Keystone’s look amazing on yours and I love the color. Custom wheels are on the list, but down below the mechanical fixes and upgrades.
sweet pea
Yea safety and mechanical come first. What’s under the hood ? Do yourself a favor, download the free wiring schematic from the WCCC website. I also got a shop manual on CD, very helpful. I like the CD vs the book so I can print out the pages and not ruin them with my greasy paws ![]()
My story is similar to yours. I didn’t want to buy something off the internet without seeing it in person but you severely limit your options. I’m going to pick up another classic when I retire and now would consider picking a vehicle off the internet because I think I’m more educated what to look for and want to get a mid 60’s Pontiac or late 60’s Mopar.
I’m in the throws of this right now. Buying a car site unseen, relying on other peoples opinion, if the info is correct, is sooo expletive SCARY!!! But my adventures are going to be documented in some sort of fashion. Whether on this forum or YouTube or Ford shows, here I come. Waited 35 years to jump. I always thought I’d stay in the Pontiac realm. But I’ve always LOVED the Cougars. Remember 1 running around my town back in the day. Doubt it was a Big Block Cougar, but pretty close to that color. Pretty girl driving it too. Or was that just my imagination??? GERONIMO
