Disclaimer: I am acting as a representative for the widow of a friend of over 40 years that suddenly passed away August 2025.
This car was made as a surprise sales award for an individual on the west coast. He declined it. My friend was at a dealership shopping for a new car and noticed this car on the truck returning to the factory. He told the dealer that he wanted THAT car and spent HOURS working with the factory to buy it.
It is a one of a kind and has been garaged its entire life. This is the first place it has been posted. I am in the early stages of determining value and interest. There are only two or three issues that are less than perfect.
I am only able to post one picture at this time, but many more are available upon request.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Interesting car, good luck with the sale. That one will be hard to put a value on. The 71-73’s have never led the way on value, which is a good thing when you’re buying and bad thing when you’re selling. I would list it on Bring a Trailer or another venue that got a lot of exposure.
I have first hand experience with the 71-3s. In 1996 I sold my 71 429 CJ convertible Mustang. The big Mustangs were just gaining interest at the time. While I wish that I hadn’t sold it, I got $56k for it at a time when my young family desperately needed it.
As I mentioned; this is just the beginning of the journey. The car is almost 150 miles away from my house. I just took the pictures Monday. Going back Friday to clean it up, oil the hinges, locks etc. Then I’ll have some pictures that better represent it.
I have known the vehicle since 1984 and the adoration he had for it.
They have documentation that establishes that it’s a special “not intended for retail sale.” Evidently, that is why it took over 12 hours to Mercury to sell it. I am going to do my best to make sure that I help his widow the best I can.
Having complete documentation will really add value to a unique one owner car like that. If you don’t already have one, order the Marti report which will document exactly how it left the factory along with production details. Cougar buyers will want to see that too, especially for a unique car like this one.
Thank you for suggesting Marti. I am very familiar with Marti. Was vital for my mustang!
TREMENDOUS resource. So much so, that one is NEVER wrong suggesting as you did. And because if one does not suggest them, is a disservice to our community.
