72 Cougar with Cyclone performance option

Does someone have info on what the “Cyclone performance option” consisted of on a 72 Cougar? The Cougar also has the GT appearance group but only has a 351-2v with 3:25 gears and FMX trans.

Never heard of it. I’ll do a little research when I get home.

Hi. I’ve seen the Cyclone Performance Option listed in brochures and the Dealer Facts Book for a Montego, but never on a Cougar. Where did you see it listed specifically for a Cougar?

OK I looked in Cougar, by the Numbers and it was not listed there.
The “Big Book Mercury Cougar” shows nothing about an option by that title. You could get the GT package, The Handling Package (Competition Suspension) was included with the GT package and the 351CJ and had higher rate springs, Heavy Duty shocks, Larger diameter front sway bar but only with the 351CJ got the rear sway bar. Of coarse this is just what the “Big Book Mercury Cougar” is stating. I know Don spent countless hours researching this, but may have some errors. If you are getting this from a owner/seller they may be thinking the same components used on the Cyclone for that package would give the Cougar the same package. I would defer to a Marti report for option package names.

Seems like a one year only option for 1972 Montego’s
The Cyclone Performance Option was a package that included Ram Air, Traction-Lok, 3-spoke wheel, etc., that were stand-alone options on the Gran Torino Sport. It was available only on the MX 2 doors and the GT.

It’s listed on the Cougar Marti report. Seventh item down on the option list. The picture isn’t very good but the option list follows:
FMX
tires
tires
power steering
power disc brakes
am radio
cyclone performance option
GT appearance group
decor interior

My thinking is it 's a heavy duty suspension package and that’s the only way the dealer could do it without the 351CJ. But, doesn’t make sense that it wasn’t special ordered, and ordered as dealer stock. Not a package I would think a dealer would want on the lot without the 351CJ drive train. Can’t make out the dates for sure, but looks like it sat at the dealer for 4 months before being sold.

Maybe a Mistake on the Marti Report.

I am pretty sure that is mistake. I have the '72 dealer price guide and there is not such listing for either the Cyclone or GT appearance group items.

Almost to the release date the 72 Montego GT was still going to be called a Cyclone. A emblem dealer in the 70s had a side “Cyclone” chrome emblem for the car.

You guys called it right! The owner double checked with Marti and it’s a mistake on the Marti report it shouldn’t of had the “cyclone performance option”. The GT appearance group is correct.

The report should not have had the “Cyclone Performance Option.” That was for Cyclones only. But your vehicle does have the very rare “GT Appearance Group.” We have attached a corrected report to this email confirming your car does have the GT Appearance Group.

Very interesting info!

The eyes and minds here are sharp. I would have taken the Marti report at face value, so it’s great to be able to ask questions here and receive factual answers. Hats off to Kevin Marti for correcting his error.

Anytime, anyone has a question about what their marti report says they should raise the issue with Kevin; he can’t correct what he is unaware of that might be incorrect. If he or his folks have made a mistake he will make it right.

I also have to question how the Interior options are called out if they are correct. The Marti says “Medium Ginger Cloth” and the last item on the option list is Decor group. It has the Upbeat cloth interior but, no matching floor mats. The owner states they are solid ginger.
So, could the Upbeat interior be listed correctly on the Marti as “Medium ginger cloth”? The decor group had a different style (comfort weave)of interior as well.

Not interested in purchasing it. So, if someone else is, here is the ad:

The owner I think was a little surprised that a mistake was made on the Marti report and I was too as the norm is they are correct. Especially compared to what we had for info prior to Marti reports. But, I think the owner was OK with the outcome. It still looks like a nice Cougar to purchase. I know Marti business with the Marti reports are all based at the highest regard for correctness. If a mistake is made he would be all over it to be corrected.

I no more then finished typing the last post and the owner sent me the updated Marti report. Which has the Upbeat interior corrected.
