73 Cougar. Speedo, Tach & fuel gauge don’t work. Just got. Not a wiring guy in any way. Anyone know a reliable cougar guy in iowa i could actually talk too.
There is zero wiring involved with the speedometer. Either the plastic gears are missing or there is something wrong with the cable. You will have to pull the cable and figure out what is the problem.
The speedometer is a mechanical and/or disconnected cable issue but you have entirely different issues with the tachometer and fuel gauge which are wired. Someone may have pulled the instrument cluster to fix one of these problems and created more?
Wiring diagrams, shop manuals and testing equipment abound, but people who know how and will work on these cars are becoming scarce. I’d pull apart the entire dash and get a look at what is underneath. Maybe you get lucky and there are connections that were not made in a rush to put it together for sale, and you can fix a couple of the issues on the spot.
Speedo issue has been discussed
Tac issue - does the car run/drive? If yes the tac has been disconnected and the wires spliced.
Fuel gauge issue - simple test, pull the plug from the fuel sender (plug in gas tank) ground one lead in plug, try to start cat , if gauge pegs full your wires and gauge are all good and the actual fuel sender is bad.
WCCC has a free schematic you can download. Even if you take it to someone they will need it as stated, NOT a lot of knowledge out and about with these cats,
If you get a chance, post some pictures, we all like to see others rides
There’s a lot of knowledge on these forum from people that have been there done that. And remember we all started sometime and learned over time.
Thanks all. Think ill pull dash and check those connections, got some lights in there that arent working anyway.
