I am in the process of replacing my pinion seal and axle seals while I had rear end removed for restoration on my 68 Cougar. I removed the pinion seal while I had it on some stands and then flipped the 3rd member down to drain oil which dropped the outer pinion bearing and crush sleeve in the drain pan. I retrieved them, however I didn’t see a oil slinger. I thought the 8" came with a oil slinger, however upon checking the parts catalog., it looks like the 67 Cougar came with a slinger, however the 68 did not. Does that sound correct to you all?
This sounds correct.
One thing that is important to oil in the 8" rear axle is the pinion nut. The pinion nut is coated with sealant and can only be used once. New nuts are cheap and available at any good auto part store.
Royce,
I did obtain a new nut. Always a good idea.
No slinger, but I would do a little touch grinding on the oil hole drain back. Tat will also help. Never reuse the crush sleeve. Better Currie Ent has a solid one with shims. Much better. I use them on both 8" & 9".
