8" to 9" axle brakes?

Good day everybody.

I just joined here but have been on here nearly daily since I picked up my Cougar 2 1/2 yrs ago. I installed new front floor pans, brake and gas lines, shock tower plates, passenger side torque box, dash and numerous other parts all puchased from WCCC. I can’t express my gratitude enough towards WCCC for there services!

I currently have a 8 inch rear end and plan installing 9 inch in the future and wondering if the brakes will interchange between the axles? Are the wheel cylinders the same? It does have factory front power disc brakes.

Thanks Jeff

Very nice looking!

Yes, but with one caveat.
Your 1967-68 8 inch rear brakes are 1-3/4 inches wide on the shoes.
You can actually change rear axle housings without cracking open a brake line. Just separate the brake line on top of the axle housing and then remove the backing plates from both sides of the axle housing, you might want to support the backing plates with a wire or something. You do not want to put stress on the brake lines / hose.

If you are getting a used 9 inch housing from a 1969/70 Cougar or Mustang, it will already have 2 inch wide rear brake shoes. Complete bolt in conversion, the 28 splined axles are the same between 8 and 9 inch rears. Unless you have the early 1967 tapered rear axles, you do not want to reuse those.

Excellent response!!!

Thank you!

Yes it is, just the info I was looking for. Thank you!
