My car suddenly developed a knock deep inside, possibly piston or rod big end bearing fail ?
Its supposedly done 360,000 miles so almost certainly terminal, and not unexpected.
My problem is now i will have to remove the motor, but be for it comes out i need to disconnect the AC compressor hoses.
can i just unbolt the hoses and let any air in/out with out issues ?
Any other dos and don’ts ?
You’ll most likely need the system evacuated. Unless it’s been non-functional for a long time.
Take the car to a shop that can vacuum down your AC system to a tank. Then you can put your refrigerant back into the car after the engine is back in place. It’s illegal to allow the refrigerant into the atmosphere here in the states. Probably frowned upon in your neck of the woods.
The car is begun to be disassembled in my garage now,
I was more worried about my AC than the other.
Im not going to kill every thing down wind, or me then.
As they mentioned it should be reclaimed but it’s not toxic it can displace oxygen so you’ll want the door open
Earlier this year I swapped one 302 out for another without doing anything to the A/C hoses. There are instructions in the shop manual on how to isolate the compressor, but if you carefully move it over to the subframe and wire it off, you don’t really need to do even that. Tie the A/C lines out of the way in the rear as well. With two people, one can help guide the engine past the lines.
My friend and I did the same with the power steering, but ended up replacing a power steering hose once we got a good look at it.
Per the automotive refrigeration cert course I was studying, a molecule of R12 can take out 100,000 ozone molecules before it breaks down. Don’t vent that stuff. And it’s quite expensive to replace. Get a shop to evacuate and store it for replacement. That won’t be cheap, but a lot less than replacement.
