Title says it all… what are Cougar guys using for aftermarket cruise? Any 1st hand experience? Any recommendations? I’m looking at the Audiovox CC100 kit and thinking I could make the Rostra “stalk” controller work with it.
I drive my car and REALLY like the idea of cruise.
Never really gave much thought to a cruise unit for my Cougar. Use it all of the time in my truck. The Rosta unit looks like a factory type unit. If I did cruise I would want something close to stock looking.

I have installed a ZEMCO ZT-10 and ZT-11 in my two classics. These were aftermarket cruise control systems sold in the '70’s & '80’s. I like them because the control panel is a small rectangular device rather than something you strap onto the turn signal wand. This way, you can hide the controller and nobody will see that you have it installed. You can regularly find unused systems on eBay for under $100.
Oh great, another accessory I NOW want.
Here’s a story about a non-expensive way to go. I blame Joe G for stirring up this 36 year old memory.
First I need to explain, it was 1975. At 19 I had just married my current wife (she robbed the cradle). I had one of the nicest cars I’ll ever own, it was a '71 LTD 2 door with bucket seats and a console. It also had a 429 that didn’t have too much pollution crap hanging on it. The car was immaculate and fairly powerful, even compared to the 442 I had traded in on it. I didn’t have a Bill B. budget so I bought a cruise control kit from JC Whitney/ Warshawsky’s in Chicago. As I remember it there was a push/pull knob mounted below the dash, some kind of electrical release that was activated by pressing the brake pedal, and a cable that attached to the accelerator pedal and ran through a pulley mounted to the floor. On a good day this system worked pretty well.
One day while driving my “family” car, while on our honeymoon in St Louis (remember, no Bill B budget), something in my 19 year old brain said that it would be a good idea to set the cruise control at 75 mph while driving on a busy highway near downtown. When all of the brake lights in front of me starting glowing brightly I tapped the brake pedal to release the CC. When that failed I tried many futile attempts at pulling the accelerator up with my right foot. Now that the cars in front of me were doing about 30 mph, and my 429 was wanting to maintain 75 mph, I realized that even with both feet on the brake pedal I was losing the battle. Fortunately there was an exit on the right that allowed me to ease off the highway… OK, nothing eased but I did manage to get the LTD on to a gravel shoulder where the rear tires tried to dig ruts in the gravel while I worked on bringing the car to a stop. For a second I thought about trying to get the transmission into “park” until I realized what the 429 might do to itself with no load on it and probably still running at 2K to 3K rpm. Eventually, after a lot of shutting off the ignition, dieseling, and shifting from “drive” to “reverse”, trying to kill the healthy 429, I won the battle.
It turns out the cable holding the accelerator decided to slip off the pulley and wedge itself between the pulley and the bracket; it was jammed real good.
When I got my LTD and my heart back down to less than 75 mph I realized that my right rear tire was hanging off the edge of a little cliff and the left rear was barely making contact with the ground. My new bride was sitting in the passenger seat with a real clear view of the drop off on her immediate right. It wasn’t one of her happiest moments on our honeymoon. I realized that since I was nearly… well … I guess I was 100% responsible for the situation, it was up to me to fix it. I restarted my LTD, put it in “drive”, turned the front wheels to the left, and got behind it and pushed it just enough for one of the rear wheels to catch some dirt. Then, in a move I don’t think I could reenact 36 years later, ran and jumped into the driver’s seat and never mentioned my cool cruise control. I’m pretty sure I never used it again after that.
Joe, wanna buy a barely-used cruise control?
Joe, beats the hell out of a girlfriend! Do what I do… tell the wife you cant decide between cruise in the Cougar, or a nice young girlfriend. The wife will order you a kit! Yeah, I’m clever like that.
Anyhooo, enough “life tips”, back to Cougars. I saw the Dakota Digi kit you linked. The $$$ isnt all that far outta whack Joe. They say the kit is complete. I plan to call them and ask a few questions about the kit and our application. Will update.
