Afternoon Tinkering

Decided to spend a little time on a mini project this afternoon. Awhile ago I bought a gauge cluster on Fleabay and it’s been sitting in the garage ever since. I bought it since it looked pretty clean and because some jackass cut the top of the bezel off so I knew I would get it cheap. I think I paid around $50 for it including shipping.

It has a bit of sheetrock dust on it. Still cleaning that stuff up.

First I removed the wiring harness. Completely intact and unmolested.

Then separated the bezel from the gauge cluster. The ammeter has the slightest bit of crazing, all the others are pristine. The plates that cover the small gauges are also mint. I don’t know if it’s typical or not, but for some reason all the other clusters I have are somewhat rusty. It’s nice to have parts that won’t require any restoration.

The lenses are all very nice with the tach being the only one with any defects. It has a small scratch that I’m sure can be fixed if need be. The trim rings that go on the outside of the gauges will require repainting.

Lastly I separated the metal plate from the bezel. As previously mentioned the bezel is ruined. The wood grain portion is driver quality. It has a very small dent that’s hard to see, but it is there. The color is pretty decent and it has no other visible defects. Apparently I neglected to get a picture of it.
Overall I’m pretty happy with this purchase. I got a bunch of very nice usable parts for just a little bit of money. Now I just need to wait for Don to get the bezels in stock and I can assemble a nice gauge cluster that will be ready to install.

Nice Al! I’m digging your photojournalism, brother! (but then, perhaps it reminds me of my own!). Well bought and nice work!

Thanks Bob. High praise indeed coming from the master of restoration threads.

Chrome looks very nice on that cluster, as well…or is the pic just hiding things? Good score for 50 clams, looks.

Yeah unfortunately the chrome is pretty nice. I don’t know what would possess someone to cut the bezel up. Might have been 68FastCat, I don’t know.

Funny how his name still keeps coming up (68FastCat), he has left us with some memories.
The bezel looks great, I should be doing mine soon. I had it re-chromed and the black rings nickel plated. Rocket had his Chrome plated and looked great, Just to be different.

Great score for the price of the cluster. Over all it looks good. I like seeing the pictures keep us updated Al.
Steven

Hey, those lines on the speedo are supposed to be red? Mine are yellow. Great deal for $50.

I know, he’s legendary isn’t he? There’s even a new twist on an old saying that I heard. “If you don’t know who the 68FastCat is on the forum, then it’s you!” Which somewhat worries me, since I can’t figure out who it is on this forum. :buck:
