There’s a foam rubber plug that fits around the shaft and inside the tube. When they rot away you get lots of hot air. You can either make one or buy one to fix the problem.
I bought a repro from Muscle Car Reproductions (MCR), installed it and it balled up and fell out right away. Forget if I improvised or said F’ it after that.
It would be nice to let’s us know the year. I have the benefit of working in these daily.
That looks like a 67 so use a child’s swimming noodle. About a buck at Dollar store. Cut off about 3+ inches and push it up inside at least 3 inches.
For 68 and 69 use 3/4 pipe insulation cut about 2 inches and push in about 3 inches.
Thank you. It’s a 67 XR7. And I did just that. I used a noodle. I also wrapped some duct tape (so I wouldn’t see neon green every time I opened the hood).
So, not trying to get too too far off topic, but since we ARE talking about pool noodles…
Pick up 5 pool noodles of various colors at the dollar store.
Swing by home depot for a length of 3/4" pvc in a 20’ section (bring a cutting device and a tape measure to cut it so it will fit in the car)
lop it into 42" sections, or a multiple thereof.
Pop into the local Craft store and grab a few rolls of “crafty” duct tape in various colors.
Cut your pool noodles into 36" lengths.
Stuff a section of pvc into a pool noodle, leaving about 8" of pvc sticking out one end (you should have about 3 or 4" of extra noodle on the other end)
Repeat as necessary for all noodles and lengths of pvc.
Hand them off to the kids and give them the duct tape to wrap the handles and decorate the noodles as desired.
*duct tape can also be used for makeshift repairs.
Stand back and watch as mayhem breaks out on your street, and you win the “Best Dad” award for the day.
Oh yeah, and you can use the extra noodle bits to repair your steering column! Win Win!
