Air conditioning

Is it possible to add AC to a 68 cougar that didn’t come with it from the factory?

Yes. Basically 2 ways.

  1. Install original factory parts and upgrade to 134A type kit
  2. Aftermarket Kits. They look kinda cheap( in my opinion)

Here’s a few pics of my latest install on my 68 XR-7 4 speed

You bet. Aftermarket, you could go w/something like this:

For a factory type system, look to your favorite Cougar parts vendor.

Looks good I wonder about the dash controls because ac isn’t an option so I would need a new factory correct set of dash controls right. Sorry I am a newb

If originality is not a huge thing for you vintage air makes a complete kit. You can also get the factory style a/c vents with controls for the side of the dash. I would not use their center dash vent however. Find a good used factory a/c dash face pad to install instead.

The control side (Dr) and the Pass side are made by Bill B and avail on his site and others. Very, very, nice items he has made up for us Cougar fans!
The best way to do factory A/C is to find a donar car, collect all pieces, replace vac hoses, and a bit of work.

TIP: Tape all the edges around the hose in the steel dash. They are very sharp & love to collect DNA!
I tape all the edges w/layers of tape folded over the steel.
