alternator regulation

My 302 engine has a perfectly normal looking stock alternator that is supposed to be much higher amperage then OEM equipment. It does indeed keep everything lit up.

I also have a perfectly normal looking external voltage regulator.

How do you tell if the alternator is already internally regulated, which makes an external one unnecessary?

If so, how do you bypass the external unit? Without the external unit there, its another area under the hood that could be used to power something else, or used for a volt meter placed where I could see it when driving.

It’s probably safer then directly to the positive terminal on the battery as well.

Without any photos of the alternator or a link to what it is how would we know? And what are you going to fix in a perfectly good system that has no problem?

You’re right. I should leave it alone.

No harm in trying to figure out what you have. I personally like to know every inch of my car so I can know what to expect. I do not like unknowns.

Like royce mentioned a photo could help determine what you have and help others fill in the blanks. You may also need to track down a quality DVOM with AMP reading capability to measure what you have. You should be able to look at the back of the alternator and determined if its internally, externally or remote regulated.
