Another Intro/Build Thread

Just made an account today after hearing of this place, and thought you can never have enough cougar forums to visit! I frequent MC.net every so often but it seems a little slow at times and I can always use more insight opinions or help that mc.net may not be able to provide all the time!

A lot of this is copy and pasted from my other thread on mc.net but it still should be interesting nonetheless…

My name is Josh and I’m 18. (I know pretty young.)

So I acquired a 1968 Cougar XR7, which has been passed down through my family, I’m the third. My grandfather bought it originally in 1968 in NJ, then while working on it about 10 years later, he was working on the carburetor and forgot to hook up the fuel line. Let’s just say a fire happened and the car was instantly passed down to my dad!

My dad rebuilt and installed a 302 while in high school and painted the car red from the factory dark green. He drove the car all the way up to 96’ when he couldn’t afford to drive it anymore, so it was stored in my grandpa’s garage and later in his drive way, exposed to the elements, where it began to rust and things looked pretty bad. It was then moved to a garage we had built in our back yard.

This past summer I’ve began taking on the project of trying to get it back running, and get it as restored as I can get (and afford). So enough of the story and on to some pics!

Old pic before it went into our garage:

Going in the new garage (about 2 years ago):

And this Is some pics of the engine work I’ve done over the summer:

had to hone out the cylinders and clean everything up to get the motor unseized and then I started to put everything back together.
painted the cylinder heads:

And my dad helped polish the valve covers with his buffer:

Some of the parts a friend of mine sandblasted for me, hood hinges, exhaust manifolds, air cleaner cover:

painted my intake manifold with some vht header paint and same with my exhaust manifolds and cured them in the kitchen stove (stinked)
put some stuff back together:

And this is how the engine looks currently:

Before the car wasn’t even cranking when I would turn the key, It ended up being the starter solenoid being stuck, so a couple taps and the car started cranking. I’m trying to getting it started soon, it has not been started since 96’.

A couple weeks ago I began work on the carburetor rebuild from a kit I got off ebay. Here’s some of the pics, I’m still not done yet but hopefully soon after my finals week is over next week.

After I get the carb rebuilt, I’m gonna try and see if I can get it fired up and then I begin it’s journey of bodywork and paint!

oh and here’s a photoshop of what I plan to have it sit like suspension wise

So that’s that for now, I’ll be sure to update my progress along the way and look forward to getting to know people around this forum :beerchug:

Josh welcome to the Classic Cougar Community! It’s great to have you here as a member.
Steven

Thank you!

Hola, welcome, guten tag, how are you,…come on in!

haha thank you for the welcome!

Welcome aboard the CCCF…since you’re on the market for “multiple” sites, take a look at classiccougargarage.net, while you’re at it!

Welcome! I think I said this on the other forum, but it’s cool to see another young person wrenching on a car their grandparents bought new. Are you going to get it painted at some point? I like the dark green and would be tempted to go back to that original color if I was you…
Engine looks good! Keep the updates coming and I’m sure you’ll get some good advice around here. :gaptooth:

Hello Josh. When you get a chance post more pictures. Interior and the problem areas.

Thanks for all the welcomes guys!

I’ll have to check that site out!

The paint I’m still kind of in the air about, I really like the factory green but I might keep it red. My dad has some guards red left over from when he got his 944 painted so there’s a chance I might paint it with that. I also think it’s pretty cool working on a car my grandpa bought new. We still have a lot of the stuff that came out of the showroom like the window sticker (it’s in bad shape tho :frowning:), and the owner’s manual.

I’ll be sure to post up more pics soon there was a lot of stuff I left out that I’ll be sure to include in here.

While we’re talking paint colors,…the original Augusta green is nice. Most decisions regarding paint choices, depend on the color of the interior. From the photos ,…looks as if you still have the factory saddle interior. If so, your color choices are nearly endless…Is your car a standard or XR7 model? BTW, saddle XR7 interior panels are still fairly easy to come by,…get them while you can, then there’s always the vinyl paint/dye thing. Here’s the link to John’s http://www.johnsclassiccougars.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=38 Used and reproduction parts and good quality upholstery. And here’s a link to a member with some interior panels, for sale; http://xcs.net/classified/interior.htm Just going to throw you right in there!

PS. I now see that it’s an XR7,…thought maybe it was, a great car to start with!

Thanks for the links. You are correct it is the saddle interior, but one that my parents reupholstered because the old ones were pretty wrecked. They got them from mustangs unlimited so it’s a vinyl/pleather material. And it is an XR7 as well

Some more pictures some of them requested.

I left out some parts that I’d like to add.

One of my projects using vinyl paint on my dash from green to black:

And here’s me sanding my hood at 14:

Some new pics of the interior and some extra shots!
Warning: interior is a bit messy (I rest some of my parts in there)

Interior looks to be in real nice condition,…think you got a keeper there! OK gotta ask, in the last photo,…the aerial shot,…Were you in the rafters!? Here’s a pic of my 67XR7,…Look familiar ??
my 67 xr7.jpg

Cardinal Red looks great with Saddle interior. I was not sure that I would like it but thee pics completely turn me around on that. Keep the pics coming… and don’t fall off the ladder!

Haha actually I was on a ladder I went a little overboard lol. Love the color on your cougar looks like it’s in great shape!

Thanks and I’ll try! Haha

Keep up the good work!

Thanks, will do!
