Anyone Own Any of This Stuff?

Been looking for a happy medium between the total crap sold in the big box stores and the big money custom cabinets would cost me.

This stuff has got good reviews and it looked decent when I checked it out at Sam’s Club. But there’s no substitute for actual experience. I’m not crazy about the fact that it’s made in China, but sometimes you have to pick your battles.

Al,

Check with Bill B., one of his many business ventures was (or is) garage cabinetry.

P.S. These days, (sorry to say) what ain’t made in China?

P.P.S. (and Al, YOU of all people should relate to this!!) Regarding your daily driver: “Dodge is a damn fine car. Ran over my first wife, with a Dodge…”

“Dodge is a damn fine car. Ran over my first wife, with a Dodge…”

OK, is this what made it a fine car? :stuck_out_tongue:

Now c’mon Bob I could never do that to Peg. She won’t ever get off the couch long enough!

Just happened to get my Sam’s holiday catalog yesterday…the bench/box/cabinet thing doesn’t SAY it has bearing slides, but the tool box does…so, unless you could go inspect one to see, I’d be hesitant.

Or, just score some free cabinetry…up to you.

'Tis a quote from (of all places) the TV show “Married… with Children”! Al should appreciate this (given his daily driver which is what led me to the comment).

You could build one of these.

Do you have a plan for that beastie?

could be interested…

Wow…that is pretty nice.

I wish it was mine.
I found it here. That guy does nice work.

LOL, should have known it came from GJ…that place is dangerous!

Thanks a bunch! that ought to do it.

Forwarded to my better half! (i don’t get to touch the tools :sigh:)

Jean

Awesome isn’t it?

Yes I could build one. But the thing is, that’s easily $1500 worth of material and I can only guess how many hours of labor. I don’t have a problem with spending the money, but I literally have enough projects to last me a lifetime. I’ve put off remodeling the upstairs in my house for two years while I built myself a garage. Peg is starting to lose patience with me about that. And I need a new roof in the spring. I’m also keeping my dad’s house which I plan to rent to Pegs sister and her husband. Unfortunately that house needs a lot of work before that can happen. And what I would really like to be doing is working on at least one of my cars so I can get it on the road before I’m too old to drive. So the prospect of another project as cool as it may be just doesn’t really have any appeal to me. But maybe I’m just being lazy.

I hear ya.

This summer we had a new patio and some landscaping done.
A few years ago I would have tackled that job.
Too many other things to do.

Sounds like my life, Al; except you forgot the 4H Club. And the FFA Chapter. And the Sons of the American Legion squadron. And…

(Oh, I guess I should include my job too)

I could add more if you like. Cubmaster and Webelos den leader for our cub scout pack. Little league coach for both spring and summer ball. The work thing of course. Not to mention spectator for basketball, track, soccer, football. No more band concerts for a couple years thank god. Now that I think about it, no wonder I haven’t come up with that billion dollar idea yet. I just haven’t got the time. :wall:

That IS awesome for sure. Dug the thread too, kind of reminds me of my ECI thread.

Effective January 1 of this year, I formally “retired” from Scouting - all of it with MY Troop from when I was just a little Nippersinker myownself. Was either Ass’t Scoutmaster or Scoutmaster since the summer of '88, with a couple of one-year breaks to act as President of our local Jaycee Chapter, and Chairman of Yuma Chapter’s PRCA Rodeo. I’m pretty much out of all three of those activites, other than being a Troop Committee member, and a “Past Almost Everything” (Didn’t make State President, and wasn’t really interested) with the Jaycees. Life Member, Abassador, Senitor, Gila Monster, yada, yada, yada.
Last year was a “Swim Dad”; got out of that when Matt wrenched the crap out of his shoulder during swim practice this past fall. He’d decided to forego Band; so I only had to experience being a Band Dad while he was in Jr High and for his older sister, both in Junior and Senior High.
Still, with all the aforementioned stuff from my last post -not to mention shooting and riding with him- I haven’t had much time to perfect that whole Master Plan to knock off a bank in the Caymens and get away clean with it; so I feel your pain, man.

OBTW, got a call today while at the Yuma FFA Large Animal Workday; the Chef de Garre of the local American Legion 40 & 8 group (La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, Voiture 622) called. Their parade train is back from having a rebuilt 454 stuffed into the “boiler”; and can I get out there tomorrow and start rewiring the front of the loco -at least the ratty headlight wiring- for their Christmas Candy runs.

It seems to never stop.

Figured I would drudge this thread up so I could post some more smileys, uh I mean update everyone on the original topic. I actually went to Sam’s Club to buy the workbench and get Peg an iPad for Xmas. It kind of pains me to have to shop there, I pretty much hate anything to do with Wally World. I was rather shocked to learn that they do not accept Visa, which happens to be pretty much all I use. So I am now the proud owner of a Sam’s Club credit line. That will get cancelled as soon as the bill comes.

But on to my review, feel free to change the channel if there’s something better on.
The workbench came very well packaged, although there were still a few pieces of sheet metal that required some massaging (pronounced hammered straight) to get them to fit right. If you’re a greenie, it would probably bum you out since I filled two 30 gallon garbage bags with plastic and styrofoam when I was finished. I’ll rate the packaging

The first big disappointment came when I checked over the parts list. The hardware that holds pretty much the entire cabinet together consists of about 300 4mm x 1/2" zinc pan head screws. Now I realize I once scored four touchdowns in a single game, but it shouldn’t be that easy for me to twist the head off the screws that are holding this thing together. (Which I did one time) It’s not like I was really cranking on them. The sheet metal is acceptable for a cabinet in this price range. The “stainless” finish on the front already has smudges on it that won’t wipe off. The top is substandard, it’s already scratched up just from using it to assemble the drawers. The slides although ball bearing are apparently the cheapest available based on the way they work. I give the materials a

As far as the assembly goes, it’s not difficult if you know which end of the screwdriver to use. Although sadly I know a couple people that wouldn’t be able to put this together. It was time consuming, at least a few hours, I’m not certain since I did it over the course of two different days. The big problem with assembly is the way the cabinet is held together and how poorly things fit. It’s not the worst I’ve seen, but for $399, I expected the drawer fronts would fit flush with the front of the cabinet. They do not and they are not adjustable. This rates

Overall I would call this a mediocre value. It’s not too expensive and it looks decent. I am a little suspicious as to how well it will hold up to use, it’s probably fine for the average DIYer. I definitely wouldn’t want to subject it to any kind of abuse as I’m positive it would fail. With a couple minor design changes and some decent hardware this could be a solid rolling workbench worthy of anyone’s garage. As it is it leans more towards the typical imported POS.
