AOD Shifter Advise

I have a 68 base model with 92 5.0 with an AOD and wanted input on the best shifter to use. The original works but could be better

There is nothing better than the original shifter. If the AOD is from a Mustang, the shift lever on the trans is too short. It needs a longer radius to match the stock shifter in the Cougar.

There is a rod that helps this. I also recommend this

Not sure if he needs that Summit lever. That is to correct geometry on the throttle for the TV cable on an aftermarket carb. I’ve never used one and set-up AOD with Holley, Edelbrock and Autolite carbs. If he is running EFI, his best bet is to use the stock Ford TV cable. If so, get rid of the plastic bushing in favor of the brass bushing.
Are there more details on the set-up of this AOD installation?

Great information, I definitely prefer to use the factory shifter if possible. The 5.0 and AOD are both from a 92 mustang and still running the EFI

You will just need to change the shift lever. Unfortunately there is not a stock one that goes in without modification. The closest in radius is 89 T-Bird…but the hole where the rod connects isn’t round. I’ve built a jig to modify any AOD lever to work with the Cougar’s shifter. You would need to remove a couple inches out of the shift rod to center the range adjustment.

Thank you for your quick response
