I’m restoring the ash tray receptacle and the housing that fits inside the dash on my 1968 Cougar. I have bead blasted it and they have cleaned up really well. Just wondering if I should clear coat it or paint it with some silver paint? Also, should I grind the rivets off that attaches the receptacle to the ash tray?
My ash tray housing really turned out better than I thought. I had originally sprayed it with clear coat and it turned out fair, so I decided to live with and just add a second coat. However, not paying attention I grabbed the can of etch primer instead and started spraying. My bad, LOL! However I’m glad I did, because I decided to spray it with Eastwood’s Silver Cad paint and it turned out much better. Now on to the ashtray. Still thinking about separating the receptacle from the ashtray door, so I can refinish it much better. If I grind off the rivets, does anybody know a good source of similar rivets?
Don’t remove the rivets. These are special rivets that you can’t find in typical hardware stores and require special tools to set. The concours crowd knows where to find them, but it is prohibitively expensive for a single item. Just work around the existing rivets.
Midlife,
Ok thanks for the heads up.
