Audio head unit installation

I have been trying to install one of WCCC’s head units into my 1970 convertible. This is the unit that I bought - http://www.CougarPartsCatalog.com/usa-1.html

I also had to buy a replacement bracket for the car because mine was removed to install a modern stereo. I bought this one - http://www.CougarPartsCatalog.com/msbracket.html

I also had to replace the bezel as the previous one had been cut. As I have an XR7, I am using one that is similar to this, but it has a different woodgrain and doesn’t have chrome around the knob openings - http://www.CougarPartsCatalog.com/c9zz-6504774-f.html

When I try to attach the bezel on front of the head unit, it does not fit correctly. These are the problems:

  1. the stalk on the left-hand side of the unit sits too high, so that it almost presses against the top of the hole. However, the right-hand stalk seems to be at the correct height;

  2. the controls consist of a bezel and a knob that are added after the main stereo bezel is attached. When I push the knob-bezel onto the stalk, it does not go far enough down the stalk on either side and barely grabs the stalk;

  3. when I push the knob itself onto the stalk, it only just hangs on and does not function properly; and

  4. there is a small pile of nuts, washers and spacers left and I can’t for the life of me work out where they are supposed to go.

The unit did not come with (or I do not still have) an installation guide.

The only thing left that I can think of is that the bracket was bent in the post.

Has anyone experienced this problem or have any suggestions? Does anyone have a copy of an installation guide that they could scan and send me?

Photos of the finished product on another car would help, too. It does not need to be an XR7 as, I presume, the bezels are the same shape for all cars.

Thanks,
Sam

Not sure if this helps any, but here ya go:

My inner adjusting rings for the balance/fade and bass/treb are sunken into the trim, so they stay where they are set.
