I’m looking into buying a car ('70 Cougar) which would require transporting home. Currently I’m looking at using DAS Auto Shippers http://www.dasautoshippers.com/
They aren’t the cheapest, but they have a depot located close the vehicle, so I could just drop off my new ride with only a day notice.
I would love to drive the car home, but the seller doesn’t recommend it for a 1k-mile drive.
Does anyone have a recommended shipper? If so, why do you recommend them? Any reason I should NOT go with DAS?
FWIW I’ve used Allegience Auto Shipping. Ask for Guy and get a quote. 877-822-7447
They are brokers and find the best deal for you. Tell them exactly what you want, open carrrier, closed carrier, etc. I’ve used twice and I know a guy that uses them 2-3 times per month (he’s a dealer from Australia)
Be cautious using a broker. They may not always do the due diligence in checking out the drivers. You don’t want someone transporting your car unless you’re certain they are insured. Not to mention some of the brokers are just a downright PITA to do business with. I’m not saying their all bad, just be careful.
I second what Al has said. I have used a broker 3 times and while I don’t have any real horror stories to tell, the trucks that were used to haul my Cats were less than top notch. One time the town where I live had to send a road crew to come out and clean up a small oil spill due to a hydraulic leak on the hauler. The driver told me it had been leaking like that for months and the owner of the rig said filling it with oil was cheaper than the repair. These type of haulers are fine for moving something you are going to restore but if its a nice car I would go with one of the higher profile reputable carriers. Sure it will cost a few dollars more but it worth the piece of mind IMO.
Well, i’m flying to Palm Springs to look at the car on Wednesday (22nd). So I’d be looking at setting up shipping (ideally having it picked up) probably thursday, friday, or saturday morning. I fly home saturday afternoon.
Of course all of this assumes I buy a car
I know the seller would (most likely) be happy to help out with loading the car and whatnot for whatever dates work, but my dad always taught me that once you buy something it becomes your responsibility and you shouldn’t rely on someone else to take car of it further. Meaning, I wouldn’t expect the former owner to have to make time in order to get the car turned over to a transporter.
All that being said, anyone in SoCal want an excuse (and money, of course) to haul a car up to the Portland area? It might be a good chance to drop by WCCC and say “hello”, maybe pick up some stuff to haul home… LOL!
Please DO NOT forget to make sure you have insurance on the car. DON’T expect the carriers insurance to be any help! I was working with a customer who’s Cat was damaged in transit. The carriers insurance did as little as possible( and paid out as little as possible) to help, and actually put the carrier out of business, and left the customer w/ a very large hole to fall into.
Check w/ you regular insurance.
Get insurance on it from Collector insurance Co. like Haggerty. They will insure it the second the car becomes yours…
not after they see pic’s and review, and …
Don’t let this happen to you. I didn’t see it until it was way too late.
I had my Cougar shipped from my parent’s house to my house. The carrier arrived about 4 hours late finally showing up at midnight. He ignored the factory tie downs and went straight for the drain holes in my rear frame rails. Try to be there when they pick it up and pay careful attention to were they secure your car.
Wow!!! Thanks for posting. I have a car heading my way from out west soon. I will be sure to take photos of the bottom when inspect the car before it heads my way just in case something goes wrong. I will be sure to look underneath before they unload at my location if possible.
i just paid $925 for an inoperable 68 Cougar to be shipped from Washington State to my home near Ann Arbor. I’m using Pacific Coast Auto Transport. I thought was a good deal. I’ve used DAS 3 or 4 other times and they’ve always been great. I stopped buying ECI cars 20+ years ago. I love the desert.
