I am trying to see what the various applications are for the HP6 dual vacuum advance.(DD-239) Per the 428cobrajet web site it shows it is appropriate for a 1968 and 1969 Mustang/Cougar with a 428 cj motor and manual transmission. Would this vacuum advance also be applicable for a 1968 or maybe even a 1969 S code 390 motor with manual transmission.
The final 1975 LM Master Parts Catalog was not any help as it doesn’t even list DD-239. Assume it was replaced with another number.
For many applications the 428CJ and the 390 used the same identical distributor and therefore the same advance unit. I don’t know about 1969 but for 1968 the 390-4V four speed used a dual advance C8OF 12127-D distributor. The 428CJ used the same distributor with manual transmission and the same dual advance unit of course.
If you buy DD239 it is only the vacuum unit if we are talking about the Autolite or Motorcraft part. Modern replacements have the cap, nipple and advance limiting parts built in. They are available anywhere auto parts are sold and fit a multitude of Ford / Mercury / Lincoln V8 applications.
I actually have the original Autolite HP 6 vacuum advance all intact with spring, washers and cap. Of course it is used but I guess I can save it for my next project - 1967 68 or 69 GT with 4 speed transmission. I have learned alot about these S code engines and it makes sense to use that acquired knowledge for the next challenge. A 428 Cougar would be nice but it seems these Cats are priced way above my budget.
