Battery Tray Replacement 1968

Finally getting some time (not for the reason I wanted) to work on my car. At first I thought the two lower bolts were installed on the wrong side. However I found a video and other comments that the inner arm for the bumper has to be removed to gain access to the last bolt.

Is it possible to just loosen the two lower bolts of the inner arm? Will that make enough room to unscrew these bolts?

Thanks in advance.

I was able to do it without removing the bumper arm. It’s just a matter of contorting yourself and getting the wrench onto the bolt. Once it’s loose you can wiggle the bracket and you’ll be able to remove the forward bolt. Just do all the other bolts first.

I didn’t know this until I had the bumper installed. Months later I went to install a new battery tray and found out which way these bolts get installed. Not wanting to mess with my bumper brackets I was able to sneak the bolts in and tighten without moving the bumper mounting. Patience is key!

Thanks to you both. I will be back at it soon and will share the results.

Yep, went thru that when I pulled mine out to clean & Re-paint it. I cussed that Ford Engineer the whole time getting the bolts off and then back on. As an afterthought, removing the tire may have alleviated some of the torture, but then I would have to unwind myself from the front axle, get the jack, etc…

I got the battery tray out just like what you guys said. I sheered one of the top bolts in half. Will deal with that tomorrow. Drilled a hole in the middle of what remains already. Will hit it with a propane torch and try some combination of EZ Out and Vise grips from underneath. I did install CJ battery cable kit as well as the 390 seven blade fan and thermo clutch. Had an Autozone plastic fan and both the positive and negative cables were red. So had to loose that shite.

Here’s the final result for now. That broken bolt fought me all morning but eventually it cooperated.

Before…Having red cables for both positive and negative bothered me. I am into electronic to say the least.

After…Wired in the CJ battery cable kit. The ground wire went to the front of the passenger side head. An additional ground strap was also connected and runs to a bolt on the inner fender. I don’t think that is stock but I cleaned it up and put it back as is for now. Have to look if there is another ground strap back on the firewall area.

I guess I’ll get the proper size battery someday with this one pukes out.

Nice work!
